Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe, Wheelock Place
When I saw Sun with Moon, I wondered if Drogo and Daenerys (from Game of Thrones, of course) had started a restaurant. My thoughts: This would be what they name it. Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe has absolutely nothing to do with Game of Thrones but I hope that I’ve got your attention now.
Sun with Moon's revamped 2018 grand menu features brand new dishes and new spins on some of their popular dishes, continuing to entice diners with a mix of traditional and modern Japanese food.
Here are some of the new and revamped dishes to look out for.

Zensai Mori ($16.80) starts us off with a platter of 7 unique appetisers. There're the delicious staples like a mini grilled tuna steak and prawn sushi, but I was intrigued by the unique combination of unagi and cream cheese, which was really good and went surprisingly well with each other.

A new option to a favourite at Sun with Moon is the Niku Atsu Hotate & Unagi Kamameshi ($26.80). A bowl of scallops and grilled unagi on top of steamed rice mixed with mushrooms and other vegetables. A hearty mix of sweet savoury with a light flavour made it a simple and unpretentious dish, especially when you add the soup that comes together on the side to make a robust concoction. Perfect for any cold rainy day! The deluxe option is available in the form of their Premium Seafood Kamameshi ($35.80, pictured above) for additional seafood like ikura and uni!

I did not expect to find a meat platter at a Japanese restaurant but their Steak Moriawase ($45.80) is a great option for meat lovers. The platter comes with generous portions of Japanese Wagyu, US Tenderloin and pork steak, all grilled perfectly. It comes with the option of four different sauces but the goma mustard, which is an original blend from Sun with Moon is a great choice for a taste of east meets west.

The Temari Sushi ($23.80) is such an adorable yet practical idea, with 10 different bite-size sushi balls. You will get to have all the sushi you want without filling overindulgent.

Or if you’re feeling like overindulging yourself, go for their Sun Chirashi ($28.80), which is almost like having a large, all-in-one sushi in a bowl.

Some might be turned off by Gyu Tan Ishiyaki ($13.80), which is grilled sliced beef tongue, but I’ve had my fair share of innards in my life, so it wasn’t that strange for me. It was grilled really well, with a slightly stronger flavour of beef. It felt like eating an extremely lean piece of beef and I really enjoyed it.

We ended the meal with one of Sun with Moon’s most popular dessert -- Dessert Trio ($9.80) -- that comes with smaller portions of their tofu cheesecake, green tea ice cream and black sesame pudding. The green tea ice cream had some really strong authentic hojicha taste with a bitter-sweet note to it, but it went well with the sweeter tofu cheesecake, which was soft and light without being too overbearing. But my favourite was the black sesame pudding. I’ve always loved black sesame desserts and each bite filled my tastebuds with the nutty aroma, with just a hint of sweetness too.
If you’re looking for an authentic and wholesome Japanese place with a broad variety of selections to choose from, I would give Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe a shot.
