New menu @ Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe, Wheelock Place
In conjunction with their 14th anniversary in Singapore, acclaimed Japanese restaurant Sun with Moon is introducing brand new dishes to their menu with a fresh twist on some classic favourites. It has only been a few months since our last visit to Sun and Moon, but we were excited to try the latest additions to the restaurant.

We started with a serving of Kaisen Yukke ($13.80) with crunchy seaweed on the side. Freshly-diced salmon, tuna and yellowtail sashimi tossed in a rich ambrosial spicy soy sauce and an irresistible onsen tamago for added creaminess.

Up next was the Aburi Hotate Paradise Roll ($23.80 for 8 pieces), a delightful mix of flamed seared scallops, crunchy sweet asparagus and tamago. This winning combination is wrapped into sushi rolls, with fresh avocado and flying fish roe on top.

Unagi and Sashimi lovers will surely be fans of this dish. The Unagi & Aburi Salmon Oshi Sushi ($20.80) is made up of lightly torched buttery salmon and grilled eel coated with a tinge of sweet soy sauce. Both are served on a bed of pressed Japanese sushi rice.

This dish isn’t your typical chawanmushi. In fact, we were pleasantly taken aback by the Odamaki Moshi ($12.80), made up of silky smooth egg custard and generously peppered with chicken, prawns, eel, ginkgo nuts as well as a surprise portion of udon noodles beneath the eggy goodness.

Another crowd-pleasing dish and a must-order is their Canadian Sangenton Tonkatsu ($17.80) served with sliced cabbage and tonkatsu sauce. This dish uses succulent and juicy wheat-fed Canadian pork coated with panko breadcrumbs and deep-fried till golden brown. You can taste the crispy texture in each bite.

The Mountain Pork Nabe ($18.80, a la carte) is not to be missed. A hearty serving of tender sliced pork belly, shiitake mushrooms, crunchy bean sprouts, sweet yellow onions and carrots, all served in a hot pot. In addition, you get to pick your own choice of broth — Pirikara miso soup, Sukiyaki soup, thick miso soup and Wafu soup (Japanese stock made out of bonito). Ours came in the slightly spicy and piquant Pirikara Miso soup.

For seafood lovers, the Premium Kaisen Mix Nabe ($26.80, a la carte) hot pot is the perfect option. This pot is a robust mix of fresh seafood such as snow crab legs, sliced salmon, scallops, prawns, squid and vegetables with your choice of soup. We recommend having it with the Wafu soup as the lightness of the broth complements the fresh seafood without eliminating the seafood's natural taste.

The next dish is a beautiful bowl of Nama Bara Chirashi ($28.80). It's made up of flavoured sushi rice infused with a hint of vinegar, and served with lightly torched diced salmon, grilled eel, fresh scallop, prawn, salmon roe, flying fish roe, fresh avocado and sweet tamago.

Ending our night on a sweet note, we had some Crispy Fried Apple Pie ($8.80). These are thin crispy pastries with apple pie filling made in-house, paired with a scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream. It was the perfect end to a great meal.
