Mama San @ Suria KLCC

Originated from Bali, Indonesia and founded by world renowned Chef Will Meyrick, Mama San KLCC is not hard to miss with its location situated at a prime spot facing a tourist hotspot – The musical fountain.

Mama San KLCC serves an array of palatable and robust mix of Southeast Asian flavours. Apart from that, Mama San practices a family oriented dining with having its portion and menu designed for communal sharing.

Being in a tropical country and having to battle constant heat and dehydration, everyone is on the constant lookout for a good thirst quencher. The Coco Lychee (RM23) and Mama San Coconut Mojito (RM23) were extremely refreshing and an ideal remedy to beat the heat. In addition to that, the fried Keropok Lekor (Malay Fish Sausage, RM12) was an exemplary choice of snack to munch on whilst waiting for the other dishes to arrive.

For starters, we were served a refreshing bowl of Wing Bean Salad (RM35). Wing bean, better known as the four angled bean in Malaysia, are lightly blanched and coated with a fragrant mix of dried shrimps and coconut milk. These two potent flavours are balanced using hints of spiciness from some chopped chillis, alongside a mild tarty sourness from the tamarind, and chopped peanuts for an added cunch.

Moving on to their meat selection, we had two heavily Thai-influenced dishes, which are also our personal favourites. The Thai Style Lemongrass Chicken (RM47) was marinated in a mix of Chef's secret blend of Asian herbs and spices, then hand-battered and deep fried till a nice crisp texture. With that, the chicken is served alongside a special Thai sweet chilli sauce that is made in-house, followed by an accompaniment of Green Mango Salad.

Another dish not to miss is the rich and tender Panang Beef (RM67) cooked in red curry paste, combined with a dash of fresh coconut milk and infused with an aromatic duo of kaffir and lime. The gravy was delicious as it had a pleasant sweet and salty taste, plus a hint of nutty flavour to it. Furthermore, the gravy had the right consistency as it wasn't too thick or watery which coated the sliced beef perfectly. Having said that, the Garlic Naan (RM11) was a superb side to dip and soak up all the goodness from the curry.

Moving on to their vegetable offerings, the Stir Fried Bean Sprout (RM28) tasted rather mundane as it lacks flavour due to the usage of basic ingredients which are commonly found in most Asian dishes. The stir fried bean sprout incorporates fresh prawns, bits of salted fish, sliced chilli, spring onions and garnished with a handful of fried shallots and coriander. However, if you are opting for a simple yet satisfying fibre intake, this would fit the bill.

In addition to all the above, there's also a series of local Malaysian snack favourites and their famous Long Cake Bar to satisfy your tea-time hunger pangs and sweet-tooth cravings. We opted for these cute little balls of Cekodok Pisang (Banana Fritters, RM12) to end our meal here at Mama San KLCC.

Mama San KLCC had indeed served up a remarkable yet innovative South East Asian influenced dishes and we'd definitely be back to try more of what they have to offer.
