Lucky Tora, Jalan Mesui

As 2018 comes to an end, we reminisce at the awesome year we spent sampling delicious and creative dishes that the Malaysian F&B scene had to offer. And dare I say, this has to be one of the best restaurants we have visited this year.
Lucky Tora is not your average Japanese restaurant. This new fusion-yakitori joint that opened its doors in Changkat Kuala Lumpur back in November 2018 offers modern-Japanese cuisine that is both unique and delicious at the same time.
While the menu may contain traditional Japanese dishes (eg. chicken karage, makimono, raw fish, etc.), the super creative people behind Lucky Tora gave them a modern twist with influences from other cuisines such as Thai and Western dishes.

What also made me fell in-love with this place is its chill-out vibe and ambiance which reminded me of the famous alleyway cafes in Melbourne with quirky graffiti and artworks tastefully placed around the restaurant.
There is also a sense of playfulness with the entire ambiance which definitely sets it apart from traditional Japanese restaurants. We were definitely excited for our lunch that day!

Szhechuan-Style Gyoza (RM24)
To start things off, we tried their rendition of the famous Japanese gyoza. The gyoza is fried and served with Chinese-style sour and spicy dressing. If you love your gyoza crispy like I do, this is the one for you.

Sashimi Cevhiche (RM22)
The Sashimi Cevhiche pictured above is absolutely mind-blowing. It's safe to say that this is my favourite dish of the lot. The ingredients are simple with raw fish paired Tora-style salsa sauce but this unique combination gives it a signature taste. A must-try for shashimi lovers.

Lamb Rack Yakitori (RM18)

Tsukune Yakitori (RM7)
What's a Japanese place without yakitori? If you're into lamb, the Lamb Rack yakitori is something you have to try. The lamb is prepared in yakitori-style and grilled to perfection. Best to go with a pint of beer. If you prefer chicken, Lucky Tora has got you covered. Try the Tsukune that is also grilled in yakitori-style and drizzled in sweet soy sauce. Dip the skewered meat into raw egg for that final touch. You have to eat this piping hot so be quick!

Salmon Madness Makimono (RM26)
And the raw fish continues! This time, we tried the Salmon Makimono served with crab meat, cucumber, tanoki and of course, torched salmon on the top drizzled with truffle oill. Such a fancy makimono. The truffle oil really helped bring out the flavours of the dish. And while the dish might appear small, it is rather hearty so be warned!

Chicken Karage (RM18)
Next up is also one of my favourites - the classic Chicken Karage served with cheese and chili powder. This also goes well with beer or if you want something light and easy to eat late at night.

Squid Okonomiyaki (RM18)
Fancy a Japanese-style pancake? The Squid Okonomiyaki is a must try especially for seafood lovers. This savoury pancake has everything covered from cabbage, bulldog sauce, mayo, katsuobushi (dried skipjack tuna) and of course, fresh squid. It's a little messy being drenched in sauce so go slow on this while eating.

Wagyu Beef Katsu Don (RM32)
If you're looking for something heavy that will fill you up real good, the Wagyu Beef Katsu Don is the way to go. Prepared in a classic katsu don way, deep-fried delicious strips of wagyu beef is topped with tanoki, fried egg and served with mixed vege and miso soup. This is a comforting dish that is sure to leave your tummy satisfied.

Banana & Nutella Spring Roll with Ice-Cream (RM14)
And to top is all off, we sampled their Banana & Nutella Spring Roll desert. If you don't already know, I am a HUGE Nutella fan. The spring roll is generously filled with awesome Nutella and it goes really well with ice cream. What a perfect way to end our meal. Definitely left me smiling.

Me So Lucky (RM32)
Tito's vodka, pineapple, lemon, falernum and black lemon bitters
Ume Fizz (RM38)
Wild Turkey 81, plum, lime and ginger ale
They also have an awesome cocktail and highball selections prepared by their creative in-house bartender. Instead of your 'regular' fix, the good people at Lucky Tora included ingredients commonly found in the region such as pandan and basil seeds. Come on by to have a glass or two and be amazed.
