Grub by Ahong & Friends, Section 17 Petaling Jaya

I stumbled across Grub by Ahong while I was finding something to eat in Section 17. At that time, it was only two-months-old and you could walk and grab a table for dinner. Now, Grub has clearly grown in popularity judging on how we were told they were fully booked for dinner on a weekday.

Thankfully, because we came early (6pm) they managed to squeeze is in before another person's booking. Yay!

Grub is very much a no-frills, self-service restaurant. So don't expect any fancy, or to be waited on.

After grabbing a table, you have to write down your order on an order sheet then come down to have a staff member key in the order.

On the plus side, the food is all very reasonably priced and the food is awesome!

We ordered Grub's Beef Ragu Macaroni (RM16.50) and we were surprised by its generous portion.

I loved the soft, tender, flavoursome beef with an assortment of mushrooms and other vegetables. It is topped with a generous sprinkle of Grand Padano cheese and herbs that adds more flavour to the dish.

Grub is famous for their steaks. I have their ribeye and flank steak - both were excellent. So I decided to give their New York Strip (RM39) a try. We were not disappointed.

I am so impressed with how consistent Grub is with their cooking. There has never been a time where they have overcooked my steak. And I must say, RM39 for 300g is a darn good deal! Their steak cut fries (not pictured) were good too!

We also tried Grub's Smoked Brisket (RM30) that came with three generous slices of brisket. It came with a sort of rich peanut sauce, that was very good. It was also served with a side of coconut gravy, creamy potato salad and pickled cucumber.

All my friends that have been to Grub mentioned their Taufu Fah Cheesecake (RM12). So obviously, we had to try it! I was initially a bit apprehensive with the idea of having soft tofu in a cheesecake, but it was actually really good!

The tofu adds a silkiness to the cheesecake, and paired with the ginger infused brown sugar, it really does remind you of Taufu Fah. I am a huge fan of this cake!

We were also served a complimentary fruit platter in a very cool icicle! How awesome is that?!

All in all, Grub has excellent Western food with a twist for a reasonable price. So if you're craving steak or Western without breaking the bank - just head down over to Grub. But perhaps you should pop them a message to make a reservation first!
