Chui Huay Lim @ Chui Huay Lim Club, Newton
Chinese culture and cuisine brings a variety of traditional cooking that dates back centuries. Inside the 170 year old Chui Huay Lim Club you will find a Teochew restaurant that preserves culinary tradition, presenting authentic dishes and using only the freshest ingredients. From now till the 30th of November, a limited edition menu will be served as part of the 7th Anniversary Celebrations available on top of the regular menu.
The colossal building on Keng Lee Road exudes a rich heritage of history and culture with the lanterns lighting up the grand entrance.
Before our meal started we had a customary tea ceremony session to cleanse our palates. This is an art that is still alive up till today! This service can be requested when you dine in the private dining rooms for special gatherings.
We started with the Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine Classic Platter ($58 for 6pax) | ($98 for 10pax), which comprises Teowchew Braised Duck, Deep Fried 'Ngoh Hiang', Deep Fried Traditional Liver Rolls and Teowchew Pig Trotter Terrine. This is a tricky one as you can either hate it or love it due to certain ingredients having a pungent taste to it. I must say that the braised duck was absolute perfection.
We moved on to the Homemade Fish Balls and Fish Cake braised with 'Tianjin' Cabbage in Superior Broth ($22 small) | ($33 Medium) | ($44 Large). This was one of the stand--out dishes for the night and a little chilli padi gave it the extra kick on a cold rainy evening.
Next we tried the Crispy fried Pork Belly and Water Chestnut Rolls tossed in sweet & sour sauce ($18 small) | ($27 medium) | ($36 large). The deep fried you tiao's tucked into the dish was a nice surprise.
This Wok fried Kway Teow with diced Kai Lan and preserved Radish ($18 small) | ($27 medium) | ($36 large) | is apparently one of the classic dishes. It is very simple, pertaining to its original flavours.
If you are a fan of oysters then this rendition of Teochew Oyster Omelette 'Gooey Style' ($22) will make you come back for more. It is crispy on the outside but gooey on the inside.
We ended our dinner on a sweet note with a Yam paste with Pumpkin and Gingko Nuts (left) and Teochew 'Tau Suan' with Ginko nuts (right) both priced at $5.20 each. These desserts are both meant to be eaten warm.
As part of the 7th Anniversary specials, diners at Chui Huay Lim will also receive a $10 return voucher for every $100 spent in a single bill.
Overall we had a great time and service was impeccable!
