Tsukiji No.8, Kuala Lumpur

"If locals eat there, it must be good!" These wise words certainly rang true for Tsukiji No.8, who had a large table of Japanese-speaking patrons enjoying their meal as we walked into the quaint Japanese restaurant.
It was as if we were transported to Tokyo, with Tsukiji No.8's wait staff bringing dish after dish of fresh Japanese seafood, as if it was fresh from the Tsukiji Market itself!

One of the highlights was the Ebi Tempura (RM38) that was beautifully plated and featured fresh tiger prawns as the hero of the dish. We saw several tables ordering this dish, it seemed to be a popular one Tsukiji No.8, and it is not hard to see why!
With the delectably fresh and juicy tiger prawn coated in a light and crunchy batter, dipped into dipping sauce and eaten with grated daikon, it is an appetising dish indeed.

Tsukiji No.8's Sashimori Maguro 3 (RM230) was sensational! Every single slice of tuna was expertly cut to perfection, bringing out the beautiful grains from the fish.
The platter is made up of Otoro (Fatty tuna), Chutoro (medium fatty tuna), Akami (lean tuna), and eating the different types of tuna was certainly a culinary experience!
Each type of tuna had a different taste and texture. My personal favourite was the Otoro - it was almost "sweet" and had virtually no fishy taste. It is also the most expensive cut of tuna!

Tsukiji No. 8's signature dish called the Ocean's 8 (RM98) was by far the most beautifully presented dish of the night. It almost looked too pretty to eat!
It is the chef's special dish that is served in a crab shell, with featuring sushi rice mixed with fresh crab meat and mince tuna, then topped with ikura, crab paste, snow crab, sea urchin and scallop. The dish is then garnished with gold leaf, giving it a touch of luxury.
All the flavours and different seafood worked well together, and everything was incredibly fresh and juicy! This dish is definitely worth a try.

No Japanese dinner is complete without some sashimi sushi! We tried the Hirame (RM70) sushi that is flounder fish, a fish that I've never had raw. It was surprisingly buttery with a mild taste, I really liked it and would most likely order this dish again.
The Buri (RM55), yellowtail sashimi, had a lovely pink colour that has quite a high fat content, making it taste rich and buttery. It was another good sushi, and I would eat it again! But I personally prefer the texture and taste of the Hirame in comparison.

Shirako Ponzu (RM40) is called milt in English and is the sperm sacs of male cod. It is served raw and the shirako is doused in ponzu and garnished with grated daikon, seaweed, and chopped scallions.
I have heard of this Japanese delicacy, but I have never tried it. The sperm sacs bursts in your mouth as you bite into it, it is practically tasteless, and the flavour comes from the ponzu and garnishes.
It is certainly an acquired taste. Will I order it again? The answer is probably no. But do give it a try if you're feeling adventurous or curious!

The Ankimo Ponzu (RM20) is monkfish liver. The liver is first rubbed with salt, then rinsed with sake. Then its veins are picked out and the liver is rolled into a cylinder and steamed. The Ankimo is then served with grated daikon, thinly sliced scallions and ponzu sauce with cucumber.
The Ankimo surprisingly does not have a fishy taste, and it taste exactly like liver. If you enjoy eating liver, I suggest trying this dish.

We finished our meal with Tori Karaage (RM18) which was deliciously fried free range chicken served with a squeeze of lemon and Japanese mayonnaise. Which was a yummy dish and a pleasant way to end our impeccable meal at Tsukiji No. 8.

Tsukiji No.8 is a no-frills restaurant, it's interior is not fancy or sprawling in size, but the food is top class and plated beautifully.
The seafood is incredibly fresh, and you can expect to find whatever fish or seafood your heart desires in Tsukiji No.8's extensive menu.
If you're looking for good and authentic Japanese food, look no further than Tsukiji No.8. You will not be disappointed.
