I am..., Haji Lane

I've been tattooing in my studio just opposite Haji Lane for years and never have I set foot in I am... Well, that's probably because every single time I wanted to try out the place, it's packed full with people and some even watching others finish their food so they can quickly take over the table.

To beat the queue, I suggest you better call up and make a reservation or make your reservations via the Chope app.

If you have ever been to Amsterdam, I'm sure you would have been to the huge "I Amsterdam" sign in Amsterdam Centraal area. I am... is inspired by all things Muhamad Jamuri Bin Busori loved about the Dutch culture.

In order to understand what so great about the Netherlands, the chefs of I am... also made their way down and learned about the culture there, trying out their food and just essentially being one with the Dutch.

You've got to respect that sort of passion from the folks of I am... to want to create a truly wholesome dining experience for all their patrons.

Coming from Malaysia, I never had high expectations for Halal Western food, but boy, has this place given me a pleasant surprise.

We were welcomed by Din, who came up with all the amazing mocktail recipes this place has. Coming from a nightlife background, Din strives to create his mocktails to taste just as good as their alcoholic counterparts.

We had the Pina Colada Red Pill ($6.90) and the Bushramint ($6.90) to start our night.

At first, I did find the drinks to be a little too sweet but as the ice started to melt, it was quite a good balance. The Pina Colada was delicious and tasted even better than some alcoholic ones I've tried before. Definitely something I'd go for if I was trying to stay sober.

The Bushramint on the other hand was more refreshing with berry notes. Perfect for a warm Singapore evening.

For starters, we had the I am... Platter ($21.90). I highly recommend this for those of you who are dining in groups of at least three. It comes with battered fried soft shell crab and squid rings, buffalo wings, mussels as well as jumbo juicy prawns.

My favourite among the lot was the prawns. When the menu said that it was jumbo and juicy, you'd better believe it.

For mains, we tried something that really caught our attention on the menu -- Belle's burger ($18.90) -- just because it comes with a bright red bun.

Those of you who must add spice in to everything you eat, this is a must try! Even the buns are made in-house with chilli infused IN THE BUNS! Paired with the jalapeno mayo, charcoal-grilled beef patty and melted cheddar cheese, this burger will leave you crying for more.

We also tried the Guava BBQ Beef Ribs ($32.90). Yes, you read that right, guava... and ribs. But where is the guava in the dish, you ask? It's in the glistening marinade that covers the ribs.

My thoughts is that this made the beef taste much sweeter and tangier. A little something different, but I do like it. However, I did think the meat was a little dry for my liking.

We were so impressed with the mocktails here we decided to have another as a sweet ending to the night. We went with the classic Virgin Mojito ($6.90) and again was not disappointed.

I tend to notice that some places use fine brown sugar in their Mojitos and that causes it to melt pretty fast. I personally prefer coarse brown sugar (just like in this drink) as it gives a little crunch to every sip.

10/10 would definitely come back to this place again. This is definitely Halal food done right!
