To all the chocoholics out there, if you are ever planning a road tip around New Zealand you will definitely want to drive through Greytown! A charming chocolate boutique can be found in this quaint settlement just pasts the main row of shops. Keep your eyes peeled for a little orange sign jutting out from the pavement. It lacks the grandeur of Charlie’s chocolate factory, but it is well worth the visit!

When you walk in the front door, you are immediately greeted by the rich, decadent smell of chocolate! And the first sight you see is a cabinet filled with delicate handcrafted truffles. These individual delicacies can be sold individually or in assortment boxes of 6 to 20 pieces ($16 - $56.50).

The four walls of this little shop proudly display all their chocolate creations. But I was most attracted to their tablet range, 75g blocks of artisan chocolate in the most unique flavours ($12.50). The chocolates range from the more common flavours of lavender, tangerine, rose, and chilli, to more adventurous flavours of lemongrass, Eary Grey tea, and curry & pappadom!

Behind the counter is a miniature version of a traditional Chinese medicine cabinet, which houses every single flavour, and part of the experience is trying all the different creations. This is also something Schoc strongly encourages!

I am most impressed by how strong each flavour is and how true they are to their description. Amazingly, curry & pappadom flavoured chocolate really does taste like curry and pappadom! It might not be something I’d eat a whole block of, but it was definitely worth trying!

Because each flavour is true to what it is, it becomes very clear which you like and dislike. But of course part of the fun is trying them all! I quite enjoyed the chilli lime, sea salt and rose dark, but my all time favourite is Eary Grey tea. I am an avid tea lover after all.

Apart from individual truffles and the tablet range of chocolates, Schoc also produces bagged chocolate covered treats, marzipan, chocolate stirrers and chocolate chips to name a few. Schoc supplies to specialty stores around New Zealand and delivers worldwide, but everything is made in their factory in Greytown.
