For those of you, like me, working in the Central Business District (CBD) area and always on the look out for the newest food joint to try out, you'd be glad to know that the basement of the Hong Leong Building has been revamped. It is now spotting some interesting new spots and one that we love is TOKIDON.
Brought to you by the fine people of Kabuke, located in Telok Ayer (and also one of my most frequent food places), TOKIDON specialises in Japanese rice bowls. Great for the busy bee looking for a whole meal in a single bowl.
Read on and you might find your next favourite place to tapao your lunch from!
Before you pick your bowl, you can also pick you choice of carbs: Japanese rice, cha soba or salad.
We tried the Truffle Wagyu Don ($23.90), which is definitely one that I think would be a favourite among the CBD crowd. One thing true is that TOKIDON is not stingy when it comes to the truffle oil. You'd be able to smell it from a mile away!
Here's something a little more on the sweet side. The Wagyu Sukiyaki Don ($17.90) features sliced wagyu beef with shimeiji mushrooms. This is one of my personal favourites as truffle isn't really my thing.
And for those of you who likes to keep things simple, the Gyu Don ($11.90) is the one for you. A bowl of striploin, onsen egg and cured kelp, topped with garlic soy sauce.
As you can see, most of the dishes here are served with beef. But for those of you who would like have something else. TOKIDON has its Salmon Cha Soba ($16.90), the only non-beef dish. I loved that the salmon was fresh and not overcooked (unlike the ones you'd get at a lot of stalls). But I personally wasn't a fan of the noodles. I very much preferred the slightly sticky and super fragrant Japanese rice.
If you'd like to spruce up your rice bowl, you may pick out from the bunch of add-ons that TOKIDON has in their menu: (from left to right) Foie Gras ($11.90), Ikura Shoyuzuke ($4.90) and Japanese Omelette ($1.90).
There are also some sides for sharing or if you're super hungry.
I absolutely loved the Wagyu Suji Miso Soup ($3.90). It was super hearty and flavourful, making it a great pair with any main dish here.
The Spicy Corn Cup ($3.90) is great for those who would like to add some vegetables into their meal. It comes wit corn (of course), crunchy Japanese cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and with a creamy sriracha vinaigrette, all topped with pork floss.
With any purchase of a bowl, you can opt to top up $4.90 for a canned drink and either the Wagyu Suji Miso Soup or Spicy Corn Cup.
I know as lot of people would associate side dishes with some fried food. Maybe TOKIDON had the same thoughts, because you can try their Tori Karaage Skewer ($1.90) and Ebi Fried Skewer ($1.90) off their menu.
From 3pm onwards, TOKIDON will start its Sunakku menu that will include the Wagyu Sliders ($12.90) and Wagyu Bolognese Toast ($9.90).
We highly recommend the Wagyu Sliders, with succulent and juicy beef patties. I wasn't a huge fan of the Wagyu Bolognese Toast though, as it was too cheesy for me. But I would still go for this the next time and order it with less cheese.
Take your pick among TOKIDON's wide range of canned drinks (from $2.90) and Japanese sake (from $11.90).
Happy Hour starts from 4pm till 9pm and you'd be able to order 10 beers of 5 cups of sake to enjoy an hour of free-flow Tori-Karaage!
