Great for me, not just because I stay nearby the mall, but also because I had the chance to try some of the new menu items that are available for a limited time only, featuring 4 beef specials. These are available in all 11 outlets islandwide.
Before I dug into the additions, I had to have their most popular BBQ Signature Pork Buns ($5.80). What’s a visit to Tim Ho Wan without ordering it? It’s milky, crispy crust perfectly complements the generous servings of char siew chunks hidden within. Order a few to share around.
Kicking off this beef extravaganza is something familiar to those who like Tim Ho Wan’s pork congee. This Traditional Beef Ball Congee ($7.00) is smooth and easy to slurp. The beef ball taste was not overwhelming, and has some vegetables inside for that added bite. Would have loved for some more beef balls in my dish.
My favourite dish, the Minced Beef Fried Rice ($8.50) is loaded with beef cubes, fried garlic and strong “wok hei” taste. Very well fried, fragrant yet not too oily. I couldn’t stop stuffing myself with mouthfuls of this dish. My only concern is once you start, it’s hard to stop without finishing the entire plate.
Even though the beef ball is minced, you still get chunks of beef in every mouthful of this Steamed Beef Ball with Beancurd Skin ($6.00) that it elevates the meat’s texture. However, the beancurd skin, sitting under the beef balls at the base of the steam basket feels like dressing and doesn’t add much to the overall taste.
I like to have shrimp or char siew rice rolls, so I was looking forward to trying the Minced Beef Rice Rolls (6.80). It was decent, though I suggest pouring less broth or dipping the rice rolls so it doesn’t end up being too soggy.
The only non-beef addition to the menu, the Shrimp with Chives in Filo Pastry ($5.50) crumbles easily but it’s thankfully not greasy. The pasty is light and the shrimp tastes flavoursome in the pastry. This dish has an extremely strong chives taste — a fair warning for those of you averse to the veggie.
Next time you visit Tim Ho Wan, mix up your usual dim sum favourites with these new specials — I’ll definitely visit again to have another round of the Minced Beef Fried Rice before it disappears forever.
