Vegetarians out there, rejoice! Here's a place for you to have a great reunion dinner this Chinese New Year. I’ve been to their franchise outlet, Lotus Kitchen and have been thoroughly impressed by dishes that are comparable to non-vegetarian dishes!
When Lotus Vegetarian launched their Lunar New Year set menus -- that caters four to ten pax (from $188++) -- I just had to try their mouth-watering dishes.
As tradition, we started of with a Yu Sheng, with the usual sliced salmon sashimi replaced with konnyaku. I liked the addition of lotus root slices that added a nice crisp to it. Their special in-house made sauce was sweet and zesty, making it super appetising.
Next, is an assorted dish of Lotus Classic Combination (the mandarin names sound better I promise). The mock fried chicken was my favourite. The crispy texture felt just like a real piece of chicken, and taste almost similar, and if you didn’t tell me that the spicy “meatball” wasn’t made of meat, I honestly would never have known.
We followed it up with a Double Boiled ‘Tian Ma’ Soup, a warm bowl of comfort that was surprisingly sweet and savoury without any meat. I grew up drinking soups like these and they definitely gave me a homely feel.
The Golden Bowl of Fortune, Lotus’ version of a Peng Cai was up next. It was a hefty pot filled with ingredients such as, seafood and meat. An ala carte version ($148 for 8pax) is also available for dine-in, takeaways and delivery (with at least 1 day notice), which means you can enjoy it in the comfort of your own home.
A fish is a common dish at reunion dinners, so the Vegetarian Fish with Fruit Salad is a must when Lotus was planing their set menus. It might not look like fish, but it tastes just like it! The texture was uncanny too! I also like that the sweet and sour sauce was a nice balance to the savoury nature of the fish.
The Pumpkin Balls with Lilly Flowers and Greens was something interesting. I really enjoyed the plate of crisp and simple vegetables, and the chewy and sweet gluttonous pumpkin balls, which went well with the mushroom fillings.
The Black Pepper King Oyster Mushroom with Lettuce Wrap was one of my favourites. Even though I made the mistake of eating them separately (don’t do what I did) the mushroom had a nice chew that was similar to regular red meat, and the black pepper gave a nice spicy kick.
We finished off the savoury dishes with the Longevity Noodles. This was a close second for my favourite dish here. The noodles had an al dente bite to it and the broth was brewed with a mixture of chinese herbs like ginseng. Anyone familiar with that hearty herbal soup that you get at family gatherings will instantly love this broth.
Time for dessert! The Tea Jelly with White Fungus and Coconut was a perfect blend of creamy and sweet. A marvelous way to end a decadent dinner.
Lotus Vegetarian Restaurant is a perfect place if you’re looking for somewhere different for this Lunar New Year, or somewhere to impress your vegetarian friends. With their delectable dishes that doesn’t skim on flavour, I’ll be back to Lotus Vegetarian and Lotus Kitchen whenever I’m looking for vegetarian food.
