I’m going to start this review by saying that this is easily one of the best Western restaurants I’ve been to in Malaysia this year.
Aged Restaurant and Bar at SkyAvenue Genting Highlands has only been open for slightly over a month. Already, it has found its footing at the first floor of SkyAvenue, featuring a classy but casual interior and an overall unpretentious vibe.
We started off the meal with a couple of starters - a Caesar salad (RM32 - which sounds more complex than it actually is) and foie gras (RM78).
The Caesar salad, which is by far the most intricately prepared Caesar salad I have ever seen. It is generally quite difficult to make a salad look anything but a salad. The chefs at Aged have executed this salad flawlessly from its taste to its presentation. The Caesar dressing is made by them and is light but packed full of flavour.
The foie gras was perfectly grilled and seasoned, easily comparable to that of Michelin star standards. We won’t name names but this is one dish that must not be missed here.
For the mains, we started off with an escargot risotto (RM56). The parsley risotto was surprisingly creamy. You can taste the freshness of the dish in every bite. We particularly enjoyed the sago squid ink cracker, which is made in-house too.
The next main we got to sample was the salmon (RM76). Unlike most other western restaurants, the salmon was not overcooked. It had that lovely pink sheen and soft middle that we relished. The salmon was confit in butter and paired with a beetroot purée.
Our third main was a succulent pork rack (RM76) topped with pineapple salsa, atop a creamy carrot purée and served with an irresistible garlic aioli. The pork was juicy and went so well with the aioli - we couldn’t get enough of it and asked for more.
Finally, the star of the show was the aged steak. The steak is aged for over 20 days, really packing in the flavour. Each bite had a concentrated profile. The striploin (RM124) was grilled to that ideal medium rare that we could really appreciate.
A tip: Since we don’t normally eat our steak with sauce or mustard, what further enhanced the taste of the already delicious meat was just a pinch of sea salt to really bring out the flavour.
Aged seems to be a master of all trades, also nailing all of its desserts. We tried the lemon meringue tart (RM32), which was refreshing and not at all heavy. The tart comes with their jackfruit ice cream. This is another must-try.
Their creme caramel (RM32) is the traditional dessert with just a bit of their spin on it. Paired with blood orange purée and balsamic pearls, the combination of the three just worked so well with each other. That slight burnt aftertaste on the creme caramel was a nice bonus we weren’t expecting.
Overall, our meal at Aged Restaurant and Bar, SkyAvenue Genting Highlands totally blew us away. We never thought we would be comparing a restaurant in Malaysia to Michelin starred restaurants in Singapore and Paris, but that’s how impressed we were with Aged.
From service to presentation, to food quality and the whole interior of the place, this establishment has hit every mark of a good restaurant. While prices may seem steep, you get what you pay for here in every way possible.
