Joining the plethora of food selections in Changi Airport is SORA, a Japanese gourmet hall brought to you by the same people from Eat at Seven in Suntec City and ANA Trading of All Nippon Airways.
Designed to emulate a business class lounge, SORA really pampers you with delicious food and great atmosphere while you wait for your flight.
Menya Takeichi’s prides itself as the number one collagen rich chicken broth ramen out there. Their Special Rich Shoyu Ramen ($17.20) certainly proves that. However, I found that the incredibly savoury and rich broth was a bit heavy for me, so I preferred their Special Shio Ramen ($16.60), which is essentially the same ramen but made with a clear broth.
Tendon Kohaku is arguably one of the most popular tendon brand in Singapore. If you haven’t been there, you’ve probably seen it on social media, or the insane queues at Suntec City. Here, you’re getting that same Edomae-style Kohaku Tendon ($17.70), packed to the brim with large, crispy tempura, on a bed of soft rice. Trust me when I say, one bite and you’ll know what all the fuss is about.
Tsuruhashi Fugetsu is a renowned okinomiyaki chain in Osaka. This delectably sinful comfort food would go perfectly with any beer. Sometimes you just need a sweet and savoury Mix Modan ($21) with its grilled cabbage and noodles to satisfy those cravings.
What's Japanese food without some sashimi? Kuro Maguro was started by well-known Japanese fish wholesalers, so you’ll be getting the freshest seafood flown from Japan daily. My favorite has got to be Toro Butsu Meshi ($29.80). You could taste the freshness in every big, juicy chunk of tuna.
Adding a little diversity is Japoli Kitchen offering Italian dishes with a touch of Japanese. I tend to be skeptical when it comes fusion dishes but Japoli Kitchen definitely got it right. I really enjoyed the Mentaiko Pizza ($15) for its thin, fluffy crust, and the sweet and savoury mentaiko sauce.
Last, but certainly not least, we had the Tokyo Sundubu for a touch of Korea. I really loved their Health and Beauty Sundubu ($19.30), a hearty yet spicy stew, and their soft and silken hand-made tofu was luxurious.
Singapore’s Changi Airport offers one of the most diverse selection of cuisines at any airport I've been to, and SORA definitely delivers a taste of Japan without ever needing your passport. Soar to SORA (which means sky in Japanese by the way) the next time you're at Terminal 2!
