I bet some of you have noticed that the weather here has been a bit chilly lately with it raining almost everyday. So what's the best thing to eat on a cold rainy evening?
Hot pot, of course! Or steamboat, as we call it here.
Put aside the usual China-style hot pot buffets as well as the expensive ones with super long queues, and check out Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle, a unique hot pot joint with (I swear!) one of the best broths ever.
I did some digging and found out that this place uses broth from their much-beloved prawn noodles. And if you're thinking that this place sounds super familiar, it cause you've probably heard of it before. Wah Kee has been around for 66 years and its main outlet in Pek Kio market serves one of Singapore's best prawn noodles.
Over here at the Esplanade outlet, you can order a small hot pot set -- the BIG WAH! Kee Pot ($30) -- that's just right for one to two persons.
It comes with flower crabs, fish slices, prawns, squid, vegetables, egg, rice and noodles.
I thought the crab was the best among the lot with really sweet meat. You definitely need to get your hands dirty for this! The prawns were pretty amazing too. I hear that they only serve salt-water (from the sea) prawns.
This homemade chili sauce definitely added the oomph factor! I was dipping all the cooked meat in it and even asked for seconds.
Trust me when I say that this is one of the best hot pot broths I've ever had. Be sure to save some space for more broth after you've cooked all the meat, because that's when it has absorbed all the flavours and tastes oh-so-sweet.
It's recommended that you cook the rice and noodles only after you've cooked the meat, so you'd have something to accompany the broth.
And if that's not enough for you, I recommend you try the Wu Xiang Platter ($12), that comprises prawn crackers and bean curd skin rolls with prawns. I always say that you can't go wrong with fried stuff and this did not disappoint. Though, I personally would have preferred if the sauce that accompanied this dish was spicier.
