Penang is more than just the char kuey teows and assam laksas... Really. I mean, you can get equally good ones in KL nowadays. So whenever I head up to Penang, I am on the hunt for new hipster cafes and other dining experiences I may not be able to get in KL.
A quick search brought my tired feet to Metisser Patisserie. Tired because we had decided to bring out bikes up to Penang for a ride around the island. And boy, was it a good idea! After eating at so many different places during our short 3 day trip, we needed to burn off the calories somehow!
At Metisser Patisserie, its clean aesthetic and airiness gives it a very classy feel and I immediately felt out of place in my shorts and t-shirt. But the friendly staff are quick to reassure me. I mean, who says you have to have tea and scones in a mid-length dress anyway? I quickly turn my attention away from the girls dressed in their Sunday bests and focus forcefully on the beautiful interior of the cafe.
Like a typical cafe that would serve high tea and macarons, the place does give off that slightly atas-y feel. Almost as though you're in TWG or some place along a similar strain. Even their teapots and tea selection are pretty fancy. It is one of those places you would probably bring your mother to for a special occasion or a high-tea with the girls. But you would be surprised at the sheer amount of men present. It was an almost balanced ratio.
Since it was high time for tea when we got there, we did have their full afternoon tea set (RM88 for two, RM44 for additional pax). The tea set comes with two pieces of artisan sandwiches in bite sizes, two savoury appetisers, two pieces of savoury quiche, two pieces of butter scones made in-house which comes with clotted cream and jam, 8 pieces of petit fours, two of their signature macarons (flavour of your choice) and two pieces of truffles du jour. The set also comes with a pot of Harney & Sons tea or two cups of Malongo coffee.
Like any decent human being, we started off the set from the bottom up - savoury to sweet. Out of all the savoury bites we were served, we felt the scones were the best. In fact, those scones were the best scones we had ever had outside of Europe. They were so good, we didn't even have to put much of the cream and jam as it carried its own flavour with enough weight.
The petit fours were great to have - each of them were made with love, and you can clearly see that with the chefs busy at work with smiles on their faces in the kitchen just behind the glass. The little lemon tarts proved to be a nice respite from a lot of sweet/salty tastes in the set and we appreciated that.
But the cherry on top of the set would have to be the macarons which were perfect in consistency and flavour. Though you only have 6 options to choose from, those 6 are good enough - dark chocolate, citrus lemon, matcha azuki, Penang nutmeg, French lavender and rose & lychee. We went with the French lavender and rose & lychee and loved both flavours. We wouldn't hesitate to come back here again to try the rest of their offerings.
