The Butcher's Table, SS2

Growing up, I used to go to Bangsar Shopping Center (BSC) with my mom to pick up gourmet homemade sausages from Mr Ho Fine Foods. After taking a break from the F&B scene for the last decade, Mr Ho and his immediate family are back in action and they have rebranded themselves as The Butcher's Table.

The Butcher's Table has a simple set-up with long wooden tables & chairs which is great if you are coming in big groups for a family dinner or just a casual get-together with friends.

We started off with the Garden Green (RM10) topped with bacon (extra RM6). It was such a refreshing salad as the caramelised shallots dressing topped with sunflower seeds and parmesan made the whole salad come together. A solid winner that kept us going back for more.

We moved on to the Crispy Roast Pork (RM17), one of Mr Ho's signature dishes made fresh daily. The meat is soft and tender, it melts in your mouth within the first bite. However the hero of this dish is the crackling, that piping hot crispy pork flesh that can be heard with every bite on the table accompanied with a chilli sauce.

Melinda Siah who is Mr Ho's wife kindly brought us a dish that is not on the menu, her personal rendition of 'Pork Rendang'. The homemade redang paste was absolutely delicious with asian spices and flavours bursting in your mouth with every bite.

The Deluxe Cheese Ring (RM25) came piping hot to the table and with every bite, we could savour the melted cheese and the sausage with a delicious hot mustard sauce on the side to compliment it.

This Grilled Pancetta (RM17) was quite fatty but it was certainly delicious. It is cured with salt and spices and has a subtle flavour in comparison to bacon.

Have you ever had a spicy sausage before? This Deluxe Spicy Ring (RM18 on the left ) was piping hot and it is made with birds eye chilies also known as chili padi here in Malaysia. Apparently this dish sells like hotcakes as the customers love the intensity of the heat according to Melinda. Next to it was the Cumberland (RM9) with sage and onion in it, mild in flavour but tasty nevertheless.

What comes to your mind when you mention a Pork Knuckle? You would probably be envisioning a mouthwatering crispy skin with steaming hot meat as you cut into the knuckle. Nonetheless, Mr Ho sticks to his original version of a Smoked Pork Knuckle (RM69) inclusive of one side, slowly cured for 10 days, slow cooked for two hours and hot smoked using natural wood chips for 30 minutes . It comes with Sauerkraut, folded in with chunks of pork but the pickling of the cabbage leans towards a more acidic flavour probably too strong for our liking. This is a good sharing dish if you are coming in a group. You would be pleased to know that you can order a crispy version of the knuckle two days in advanced.

Their Bacon Fried Rice (RM15) absolutely yummylicious. The fluffy rice grains that are tossed into into the hot wok is the quintessential comfort food in the Asian culture and this is one of the must-try dishes.

Just when you think you had enough of pork for the night, the Signature Salted Beef (RM39) arrives at the table and it is satisfying to the soul.

As the referee is tapping you out and counting up to ten, and all that is within you is telling you to succumb to the rest that is awaiting, alas, a final contender. Enter the ring-Baby Back Ribs (RM39) we almost gave up but the smell of the BBQ sauce aroused a primal instinct within us to fight for the last round. All we needed is more of that delicious sticky sauce on the side.

Mr Ho's Sausages are made up of 80% meat and 20% fat. Customers are also encouraged to purchase the fresh gourmet sausages from the deli at the counter. You can say we pigged-out at The Butcher's Table after eleven pork dishes. Do come early to get a table on the weekends as we hear they have been completely booked out since its opening.
