Sens Singapore, Holland Village


There's something about Japanese food that sparks a light in me. It is certainly one of my all-time comfort foods. And Sens is a hidden gem that's tucked away in 'Taste' Supermarket, where the fish and meat producers supply fresh food to the restaurant daily.

This is an open kitchen concept with very basic fixtures and fittings, a casual dining space that is available for shoppers to either have a snack or a full meal while shopping the groceries.

Sens has just introduced a few new items on their menu and I was really excited to dive into the food.

First, we had the Kajiki Tataki ($12) served in a cocktail glass that features a swordfish (mekajiki) with zesty flavours garnished with seaweed. This was a good starter to kick off the night!

Moving on the Chuka Udon ($16.80) was served cold and showcases crab meat, thinly sliced egg, prawn, and sliced cucumber and Champagne ham. The noodles are imported directly from Japan. Honestly this was such a refreshing dish, it has a citrus twist to the flavour profile which was surprising. A definite winner and a must try!

Next we are unveiling the Summer Collection of Aburi Maki, showcasing premium ingredients imported from Japan with special homemade sauces.

The Sugo Maki ($15.50) came drizzled with a good serving of moreish century egg sauce and sprinkled with tobiko. The filling is made up of salmon, scallop and king fish. This sauce has a very pungent smell and a strong flavour, plus if you are a fan of century egg, you will definitely enjoy this dish. However, after one mouthful the taste was a little overwhelming for me and I decided to give this a pass.

The Oishi Maki ($17.50) was one of my personal favourite dishes here for me! The ebi was paired with avocado and topped with a luscious mentaiko and sweet apple sauce, not forgetting the generous amount of tobiko. What differentiates this from the regular makis is the homemade sauce, which was a perfect combination.

Finally, the Umami Maki ($17.50) was plated as a tall tower and has foie gras as the star of the dish paired with the creamy avocado. The rice is sprinkled with Japanese furikake and finished off with edible flowers. Definitely pleasing to the eye and ultimately delicious.

So, if you are looking for a quick meal and makis with a slight twist, then Sens Singapore is something you can consider. This establishment also offers teppanyaki and showcases cuisines from different regions of Japan.

In the future this supermarket will emulate a Japanese concept where you are able to buy your meats and the chefs will cook it up for you on the spot to your liking! Overall, excellent quality of ingredients and affordable for everyone.
