Mention Singaporean street snacks and Old Chang Kee is one that would pop up in most minds. Old Chang Kee stalls are everywhere around Singapore and the perfect thing to snack on whenever and wherever.
Now, you can get the famous curry puffs and fried skewered meats, as well as some brand spanking new and exclusive items at its first flagship store – Old Chang Kee Coffee House @ Rex – at the original location of the first stall.
Located at the junction of Mackenzie Road and Niven Road and opposite the renowned Rex Cinema, this was where his entrepreneurial adventure with a humble curry puff started over three decades ago.
What began as a tiny stall in the corner of the local coffee shop in 1956, is now a bigger and brighter 50-seater space that spans three shophouse units. Old Chang Kee Coffee House @ Rex, exudes old-school charm by way of a myriad of memorabilia and furnishings that reflect a bygone era.
Here are some of the new items that are exclusive to this flagship store.
Counting amongst its exciting offerings is the fluffy Flower Bread which consists of seven freshly baked, pull-apart buns. Nestled in the middle of the golden sesame-topped crust ‘flower’ is an enamel bowl filled with a choice of: Curry Chicken ($11.90); Chicken Stew ($11.90); or Beef Stew ($13.90). The dish also comes with free flow gravy, which makes it perfect for sharing!
You can even opt to take-away this dish as Old Chang Kee has come up with special take-away boxes just for this.
Another menu exclusive is a nostalgic dish reminiscent of Old Chang Kee’s Hainanese heritage. The Beef Stew Rice ($9.50) consists of rice topped with tender beef, radish and carrots redolent with the fragrance of spices. For a modern touch, diners can opt for the Baked Beef Stew Rice with Cheese ($10.90) served in a mess tin with melted cheese and a sprinkling of chopped parsley.
Not forgetting, some of Old Chang Kee’s signature dishes that will truly make you feel right at home.
You’d definitely be able to find Old Chang Kee’s signature Curry’O ($1.50) - curry spiced potatoes, chicken and an egg slice stuffed and sealed within a flakey, buttery crust.
Old Chang Kee Coffee House is set to spoil you with its huge array of food choices.
There’re even dishes from Curry Times, such as the popular Dry Laksa Goreng ($8.50) – thick bee hoon noodles with prawns, fish cake slices fried in a dry laksa rempah (spice mix).
And the Curry Times’ special, Nasi Lemak with Dry Curry Chicken ($8.90) with tender, minced chicken coated liberally in curry spices paired with aromatic coconut rice and sides of tangy ‘achar’, fish cake, sambal chilli, fried peanuts and anchovies.
Bun Times also makes an appearance here with its pillow-soft buns, generously filled with an assortment of savoury and sweet fillings, like spicy Hae Bee Hiam; Sardine; Curry Chicken; Ikan Bilis; and fragrant Coconut (all $1.70).
For those of you on-the-go, try out the Dip ‘n’ Go products, such as deep fried Chicken Skins ($4.90); and QQ Fries ($4.90) served in the brand’s all-in-one snacking, dipping and drinking cup.
