Mid-Autumn Festival Mooncakes @ Antoinette

Mid-Autumn Festival, or commonly known as mooncake festival, is just around the corner. And as its latter name suggests, it’s a festival where people gather to eat mooncake.

Singapore has been quite creative with its mooncake recipes over the past few years and Antoinette’s Chef Pang Kok Keong is not one to miss out on showcasing his creativity during this festive season.

Making its brand-new entrance is the Salted Yolk Hae Bee Hiam (available in a box of 4 for $60+). Done in the traditional baked skin form, this mooncake boasts the traditional salted egg yolk centre, but mixed with homemade hae bee hiam (or spicy prawn paste). This is all encased within a creamy low-sugar while lotus paste with pumpkin seeds.

We tried and tested this and all we can say that this is truly a burst of flavours. In one bite, you’d get spicy, sweet and savoury all dancing on your taste buds.

I know many who would prefer the snow skin variation of mooncakes for its soft and chewy skin. Chef Pang has introduced a variety of eight different Assortment of Mini Snow Skin Mooncakes (available in a box of 8 for $56.50+), featuring two new flavours with a local twist: Ondeh Ondeh and Orh Nee.

The Ondeh Ondeh flavour is a sort of “lava (moon)cake”, where sweet gula melaka would ooze out when you cut into it. Just like your traditional ondeh ondeh kueh. This mooncake was a little too sweet for my liking, but nonetheless had good fragrant flavours.

The Orh Nee flavour was something rather unique that features a yam paste and coconut milk base with a white chocolate centre that encases a mix of pumpkin puree and shallot.

Antoinette is rather famous in Singapore for its wide range of delicious macarons. Thus, it is no surprise that Chef Pang would introduce the Macaron Lunar (available in a box of 6 for $19+), perfect for those who would want to add a more modern touch to this traditional festivity.

Sandwiched between two macaron shells are low-sugar white lotus paste with a spicy hae bee hiam (spicy prawn paste) and salted egg yolk centre, marrying a whole variety of flavours – spicy, sweet and salty – in one single macaron. This personally was a miss for me, but I would say is a must-try for adventurous eaters out there.

For those not so adventurous ones, Antoinette will also be selling the traditional Single Yolk or Double Yolk mooncakes that will come in a box of 4 for $53+ and $57+, respectively.

And from Sept 9 onwards, Antoinette will be selling these mooncakes in their limited-edition (and super pretty) Rose Gold Box.
