Me Famiglia, Kepong

Kepong is known for many things; Bak Kut Teh, family style chinese restaurants, epic traffic jams, and being generally far away from everything. You don’t exactly think of western or european cuisine when it comes to hunting for food in that area. So when we got the invite to try out a little Italian restaurant in Kepong, our interest was definitely piqued.

Me Famiglia is a small neighborhood restaurant located in Taman Usahawan Kepong. The business, which started 11 years ago, aims to serve simple and authentic italian food at fair prices. It may be a bit of a hunt to find the restaurant as the restaurant’s modest signage and simple interior can be easy to miss. But for what they lack in flair, they definitely make up for in the food.

Known for their affordable lunch sets and tiramisu cake, we were curious to try out just how good a set meal could taste at prices as low as RM10.90 for a starter, a main, and a drink.

As expected with any italian meal, we were served the soup of the day - Mushroom Soup, (RM5.50, which comes with all their set meals) and some garlic bread (RM4.00) to start. For mains, we were greeted with some Pasta, Pizza, and Lamb Shank.

The Linguine D’Mare (RM26.90) is a seafood pasta cooked in a special garlic sauce. We won’t lie, for such a steal of a price we didn’t have very high expectations for the quality of seafood, but boy were we proven so wrong. First of all, the dish is extremely liberal with the amount of actual seafood on the plate, there was an abundance of FRESH squid, prawn, and mussels all nicely tossed in a tasty red sauce. The pasta was done al dente, and the seafood was cooked to absolute perfection! It is really such a win to find a good seafood dish cooked properly that won’t cost you an arm or a leg nowadays, the evening was already off to a good start.

Their Baked Lamb Shank (RM32.90) serves a generous portion of grilled vegetables, pasta, and of course absolutely tender lamb that practically falls off the bone. The meat is soft enough for you to have to barely chew, and is complimented with a hearty creamy vegetable based sauce. A must try for those who are fans of big plate meals.

For Pizza, we were initially only served the house Me Famiglia Pizza, but hiding unassumingly in their menu we spotted three words that caught our eye; Pizza. Pot. Pie. (RM27.00) And we knew we HAD to have it. For those of you who haven’t heard of Pizza Pot Pie, buckle up, cause your pizza journey just got a whole lot better.

Here’s a quick and important pizza history lesson: after the first known pizza store was opened in New York, USA in 1905 by Italian immigrant Gennaro Lombardi, the popularity of the mind blowing dish (which literally allows you to eat your plate) spread across the US as fast as general hype of anything could spread in the early 20th century. It wasn’t long before citizens of Chicago were enjoying delicious slices of tomato paste, meat, and melted cheese, and decided that they wanted more of it on their plate. Come 1940, the famous Chicago Deep Dish Pizza was created to allow more layers of mouthwatering filling in one bite. The crowd went wild, and Chicago became a staple in the journey of pizza across the world. But wait! It gets better… In 1972, the Chicago Pizza and Oven Grinder Company decided to do the world a one up and made an inverted pizza by layering cheese, sausage, button mushrooms, and tomato sauces in a bowl, covering the bowl with a layer of dough, baking it till crusty, and then serving it overturned and released as the beautiful dish the world has now come to know as Pizza Pot Pie.

This is really the first restaurant in Malaysia we’ve come across that serves pizza done in this style. So the dish very quickly became the highlight of our meal. It had just the perfect amount of cheese melted into the tomato sauce, flavourful meat (chicken or beef options available), and thin slices of mushrooms to give it a hint of umami. For a restaurant so far removed from the birthplace of Pizza Pot Pie, we thought they did a pretty good job with this dish.

The Me Famiglia pizza (RM32.50 for 12” pizza) is also a chef’s recommendation, it features tasty smoked duck slices and capsicum for a fresh crunch. Patrons can opt to have this with or without beef, it’s also served with some of the lunch and dinner sets in the smaller size of 9”. Their dinner sets start from an easy price of RM29.90 for two persons.

The final highlight of the night was the Tiramisu cake (RM9.90). Unbelievably done without a drop of alcohol, this slice of cake tops the list as the most affordable authentic Tiramisu cake there is out there. It had a wonderful mix of textures across the layers of marscapone, espresso, and lady finger cookies. If you’re looking for a cake for any occasion (or just because, cake) we highly recommend you bookmark this spot for it. We were thrilled to find out that the whole 1KG cake is available for order up to only one day in advance for only RM55.

If you’re ever in Kepong, you should definitely check this neighbourhood restaurant out. It’s a great option for an easy, hearty family meal that won’t pinch the wallet, and also tastes good.
