The Clueless Bride: Make Up Artists
I am not the kind of person who likes to put on make up. It takes a long time, clogs up my pores, leaves my skin worse off than before and it's an expensive hobby to maintain!
So I normally leave my make up applying skills to special occasions and very rarely for everyday events. What's in my makeup bag is liquid foundation (I love the Maybelline Fit Me Matte Finish), Maybelline concealer, W.Lab sebum finishing powder, my Estee Lauder blush set, an A’Pieu eyebrow pencil and the most recent addition - a Skinfood highlighter I got from Korea.
That's pretty scarce for a woman's makeup bag, I believe.
So when it came to planning my wedding, makeup was honestly the last thing on my mind. Thankfully, one of my bridesmaids, Joy Chong, is a multi-talented makeup artist and one of the best in Malaysia (and that is my honest opinion).
Joy's style in makeup is versatile and suits a bride's needs. Give her free rein and you allow her to explore creative options for your special day. But if you decide that you know exactly what kind of look you want for your wedding, she is easily adaptable too.
Since I didn't need to actually look around for a makeup artist, I decided to help other "clueless brides" out there, who might be struggling to find the right makeup artist, by interviewing Joy and asking her what brides should look out for when they are searching for a makeup artist (also known as MUA - I had to learn this by making an educated guess).
1. Comb through the make up artist's portfolio
Make up artists are exactly what their title suggests. They are artists. Every artist has a portfolio and what you should do is to look through their portfolio to see if you like their style. If you are unsure if that particular style would suit you, ask the MUA if they do trials. Pay for a trial session to be absolutely sure.
2. Cost is just ONE small factor
Okay, if you're a total cheapo like me (and you're marrying a Chinaman who believes it is best to go for the cheapest option), then you might have come across a few who charge as low as RM150 per makeup session. Or you could have also gone in the opposite direction to find MUAs who charge well over RM1k per look. But cost is just one factor when choosing a MUA. Don't just look at the cost. Again, look at their portfolios to make sure you are comfortable with their style.
3. Airbrush or normal makeup
This is something I literally only heard of today, when I spoke to Joy about common questions she gets. Clearly, I am totally uneducated when it comes to makeup. Airbrush makeup is makeup sprayed onto the skin using an airbrush instead of being applied with sponges, brushes, fingers. That, by the way, is Wikipedia's definition. So, I suppose the MUA would come with some high tech tools and stuff. Personally, I prefer having that human touch.
I am going to leave it at that. It is best for clueless brides to pick out a make up artist that they feel most comfortable with based on their style and method of make up application.
I am going to give Joy full rein over what she wants to do with me - as I have told her, just don't make me look pale or fair. I quite enjoy being tanned AF.
