There's something about Japanese food that keeps me coming back for more, especially when I find a place that stands out above the rest. Personally, it's an addictive Asian cuisine that I can never get enough of. I just love the variety of dishes available that are simple yet uniquely different in taste compared to other cuisines. What I enjoy most is the authentic experience of dining because every dish comes out looking like an art presentation.

So you can imagine my joy when I heard that we were having lunch at Kame Sushi. After being ushered to our seats at the sushi bar by a friendly waitress, we were promptly presented with their set lunch menu. I am a huge fan of set lunches because it helps a fickle-minded person like me to decide faster and better during peak periods. It didn't take us long to decide. We settled with their recommendations to taste the Lady Set and Manpuku SS Set.

Our first thought when the Lady Set (RM55) arrived was this is a feast fit for a king (or perhaps we should say, fit for a queen)! The generous spread on the tray consisted of udon, chawanmushi, salmon, pork belly, salad, and sashimi including a rice bowl. I like to think that this meal make a well-balanced diet, as it had all the necessary carbohydrates, protein and fibre. Each side dish had just the right amount of portion to satisfy – not too much nor too little.

This rice bowl of goodness was my favourite from the Lady Set. I am not exactly a rice person but I found this to be super tasty. The colourful collection of assorted sashimi, cucumber and egg with hints of tobiko was yummy in a mouthful. All the elements in this bowl combined really well together. I enjoyed this so much that I finished it till the last grain of rice!

We also loved how their sashimi was really fresh, thick in portion and melted in our mouths like butter. Each cold slice had a refreshing sweet taste to it. The fresh prawn and octopus tasted good as well and completed the look of this side dish.

Their chunky pork belly was absolutely delicious. Served with a long bean and a small dollop of yam, the pork belly was cooked evenly inside and out to perfection. We liked that the meat was juicy, full in flavour and the layer of fat served was not too much.

A friendly tip when you are spoilt for choices on where to start – Eat the hot dishes first. The udon had unfortunately gotten cold by the time we got to it. Nevertheless, we enjoyed slurping the tasty broth from this bowl. The udon noodle were chewy, soft and easy to swallow.

The Manpuku SS Set (RM95) on the other hand is a good set to roll with if you are a sushi lover. Though we felt that the price for this set is quite steep for lunch, the quality range of sushi that you get out of it adds up for the price. The array of food served consisted of 12 nigiri sushi and 1 maki roll, which were all really fresh and delightful. This set would be good to share too if you are a small eater.

Sitting at the sushi bar has its privileges. We had the opportunity to observe the chef prepare our sushi and sashimi fresh in front of our eyes. We watched as he carefully put together every precious piece of sushi with the utmost concentration. The amount of effort that goes into preparing a meal is truly an art and it makes me appreciate Japanese food more.

We ended our meal with a healthy dose of greens. The sesame sauce that accompanied the bowl of salad tasted very unique and left a pleasant nutty aftertaste. It was an interesting sesame flavour. We reckon to give this a try when you are here.
Lunch time in Kame Sushi is between 11.00am-3.00pm so drop by between those timing if you are keen to try their lunch sets. All in all, we can confidently conclude that this is a good place to eat authentic Japanese food. Prices can be high here but they do offer other set lunches from as low as RM16 to RM28. The ambience of the restaurant also makes it a good venue to catch up or meet for discussions.
