Chong Qing Grilled Fish, Sunway Velocity

If it's one cuisine that is fairly underrated in Malaysia, it's Chinese cuisine. We're not talking about local Chinese cuisine. We're talking about that authentic, unapologetically salty and spicy, mainland Chinese cuisine.

Many might already be familiar with the famous Hunan region or Szechuan region for its dishes. But little attention has been paid to Chongqing, which is actually located not too far from these two other regions. So you'll undoubtedly see some similarities in the dishes.

One of the most interesting dishes that is always worth ordering at a Chinese restaurant is the stir fried Chinese cabbage with pork (RM18). While it may not look like much and is commonly found in Chinese restaurants, it is always a good indicator of how good the food is at that restaurant. Seeing as how it is such a simple dish, if it is executed well, you can be sure the rest of the food you will find at that restaurant will be up to standard. This was beautifully cooked and we enjoyed every bite of it! Not to mention, it is a decent portion for the price.

Of course, when dining at a place called Chongqing Grilled Fish, the dishes you ought to have include their famous fish, which comes in a variety of flavours including spicy fragrant, spicy numbing, pickled cabbage, hot & sour, mushroom herbs, fermented black bean, fresh chillies and chopped chilli pepper. The fish options are sea bass, golden snapper, red tilapia, temerloh patin and silver pomfret. The dish is customisable - so all you have to do is choose your fish, your choice of flavour, level of spiciness and choice of sides. What I really like about this place is that the prices for the fish are very transparent and are written on the menu itself. The price ranges from a very reasonable RM58 for small fish to RM108 for large ones. Besides the fish, the restaurant does great meat dishes. It is also worth trying their double cooked spicy pork belly slices with garlic shoots (RM28).

One of the staples here is the Lijiang fragrant spicy fried rice with shredded pork (RM16). This is a great accompaniment to the dishes if you're looking for a bit of a kick.

One of the dishes I would definitely recommend trying is their salted egg range, which includes their salted egg fish skin (RM24) and salted egg calamari (RM28). Both were stellar dishes that you will want more of.

Another dish to ignite your senses quite literally would be the spicy chicken cubes (RM30). Buried in a mountain of dried chilli, you will have to dig through this vibrant dish to find the chicken cubes that will leave your mouth burning with satisfaction.

To cool down your tastebuds after a lot of chilli, a must-have is the fruit tea. The 2L fresh fruit with jasmine tea (RM36) is the perfect way to end the meal.

Chongqing Grilled Fish was overall a very enjoyable experience that I will readily go back for again in the future.
