Artbox Singapore: Check out Talad Drink & Thai Kitchen

Within five minutes walking distance from Toa Payoh MRT, you’ll find great and authentic Thai food, and not to mention, it is wallet-friendly too. As one who frequents Bangkok, this little gem certainly brings me (or, at least my tummy) back to the land of smiles.

First up, I started with the Thai Grilled Pork Skewers ($6 for 3pcs, $10 for 5pcs). I do admit, it is a little bit greasy, but that's where the flavour lies. The meat is pretty tender, as it breaks off the moment you bite into it.

Another choice of appetiser to try is the Barbecued Squid ($12). Lightly cooked, you'll taste a hint of smokiness and it is pleasantly chewy. It comes with two different sauces. The Thai BBQ sauce leans towards being sweet and heavy, but I personally prefer the seafood sauce as the flavour profile is a little spicy but light on the palate.

Faithful to the way Tom Yum Soup ($6 - small, $10 - big) is prepared in Thailand, they’ve cooked up the original milky version of this dish. The coconut milk is very dominant in the overall taste, accompanied by the spices and herbs, though the prawns in there will take some hand work for you to get to.

More to add on is a good old Green Curry Fried Rice ($5.50). I like that the rice isn't too spicy and that it is fragrant, as well as grainy. I would suggest that you add on any of the sides mentioned earlier to have a more complete experience.

One of the main highlights of this place is the Sea Bass & Mango. ($23) I absolutely love the wings part of the fish, as it is crispy but slightly fishy. The mango added on top creates a sweet and sour balance against the fish.

Served warm, we have everyone’s favourite Sticky Mango Rice. Normally, the traditionally way of preparation would be to use a younger mango, which tends to be firm and slightly sour. Their interpretation, however is one that is sweeter and softer, as they've selected ripened mangoes. Coconut milk is then added for a more dynamic flavour. Caveat: The skin is left on, but washed, so don't worry!
Of course, we cannot end this review without mentioning what makes up for the name of this place. They have amazingly colourful drinks, that are absolutely pleasant on the eyes, as it is on the taste buds. Whether you are looking for a classic Chai Yen (Iced Milk Tea) or something more exciting like An Chan Passionfruit ($3.80), I am pretty confident that, if you are in the area, it is worth popping by for.
