Tonkatsu Anzu @ 4F The Table, Isetan the Japan Store

If you're looking for a new and authentic tonkatsu experience, look no further as Tonkatsu Anzu has set up its shop @ 4F The Table, Isetan The Japan Store in Kuala Lumpur.
Anzu is a brand associated from the Fukuoka region in Japan, specialising in all things tonkatsu (Japanese deep-fried pork fillet).
Known for its quality, they only use carefully selected premium Sangen pork belly that is aged for 7 days, breaded and cooked at an extreme temperature of 160 degrees Celsius. This results in a perfectly crunchy outer layer while still being moist and juicy on the inside.

Chawanmushi (RM14)

Japanese classic omelet (RM16)
Before we indulged ourselves in their specialty tonkatsu dishes, we piqued our appetites with a couple of their signature appetizers. I'm a big fan of their chawanmushi, a Japanese staple appetiser which they've done absolutely right.

Gin-Jo-Pork Fatty Loin Katsu Set (RM55)
To start things off, we sampled the star of the show from the Limited Anzu Select section, the original Gin-Jo-Pork Katsu Set. There are 3 types to choose from; the fatty loin, regular loin and fillet.
I went for the fatty loin option as I love my tonkatsu to have a good mix of tender meat and juicy fats. If you're not too inclined towards a fatty cut, you can go with the regular loin or fillet option which has a higher meat ratio.
Let me just tell you that this is one of the best tonkatsu I have ever experienced, comparable to the ones I had in Osaka. It's interesting to note how they perfectly cooked it to crunchy perfection while still maintaining the juiciness inside; a feat that is difficult to achieve if not done properly.

Hot Pot Pork Loin Katsu Set (RM42)
Hot Pot fans rejoice! This is essentially a piece of Pork Loin Katsu smothered in Anzu's special sauce and egg. The combination of the sauce and egg gave it a very tasty and unique taste to this dish.
This is a perfect dish on a cold rainy night as the hot pot-styled tonkatsu will keep your tummy warm and fuzzy. However, I'm personally not a big fan of this as I typically like my tonkatsu to be crispy

Fried Shrimp & Pork Loin Katsu Set (RM50)
Can't decide if you want pork or seafood? Why don't have them both! They've made your life easier with a combination of crispy shrimp and their delicious tonkatsu.

Cheese Pork Loin Katsu Set (RM40)
And not forgetting cheese lovers, they also have a cheese tonkatsu variant to further elevate your tonkatsu dining experience. The saltiness of the melted cheese within the piping hot pork loin is just a heavenly combination. Definitely one of my favourites and highly recommended.

Of course, all their Sets come with a side of cabbage (refillable) as a perfect pairing to your tonkatsu experience. You can also opt for Japanese white rice if you need to load up on carbs.
Pro tip: pound some sesame seed finely, add the Anzu homemade tonkatsu sauce and mix it well with the cabbage. Heavenly.

Baked Rice Cake & Ice Cream (RM16)
To cap off our amazing night, we were recommended to try out the Baked Rice Cake & Ice Cream dish. If you're familiar and love mochi, you will enjoy this too. This perfectly steamed fragrant rice cakes served with a scoop of ice cream left me wanting more.

Homemade Almond Tofu Jelly (RM12)
If you prefer a more 'subdued' dessert, try out their Homemade Almond Tofu Jelly. While the almond taste is very pronounced, it's not overly sweet. Perfect for the health-conscious (but still a sweet-tooth) type of person.
It's not often we find places that serve up quality tonkatsu in Kuala Lumpur. If you're craving for some, I suggest you hit up the fine folks at Tonktatsu Anzu and make your reservations today!
