Vine Cafe, Starling Mall

When it comes to new cafes and establishments, we're always a little wary, especially since there have been so many popping up. But since Starling Mall is still fairly new with a lot of potential (stiff competition, bustling vicinity), we decided to give Vine Cafe a chance. Vine is located by the entrance of the beautiful new Starling Mall, boasting a modern facade.

To start off our meal, we had the Ginseng Oolong Tea and Moroccan Blend Tea. Both teas are easily paired with any dishes, making them good choices if you’re looking for something light yet flavourful.

For starters, we had the From the Garden Salad (RM 16) and Summer Sweet and Sour Salad (RM 20). Both salads looked aesthetically pleasing and were filled with fresh vegetables. They were also sizeable portions, making it (almost!) a full meal for some.

For something a little heavier, we also tried the Nachos, which were quite beautifully presented as you can see from my picture above. The tortilla chips were light and crispy. The chilli con carne was subtly flavourful but we could have done with a larger portion of it for the massive plate of chips.

A little odd and displaced in the meal but still welcome nonetheless was the Muesli Trifle, which had yoghurt, honey, berry coulis and fresh fruits. It was quite a large and generous portion, but nothing outstanding about it.

Served in the same glass as the muesli are their milkshakes. We tried the Oreo Milkshake and Strawberry Milkshake, which were both what you would expect from a milkshake. They were both creamy, full of rich milk and sweet.

Then, we moved onto mains. The Chicken Roulade had a piquant sauce that complimented the chicken well. The chicken was tender and the sauce added a tang to it

The Vine BLT Sandwich (RM 15) was filled with hams and meats and topped with pickles, definitely something for the meat lovers. The Curried Turkey Sandwich (RM 20) was an interesting take to the normal turkey sandwich with hints of curry.

The Prawn Aglio Olio Squid Ink Spaghetti (RM 28) was my favourite dish here. It had fish roe, prawns and squid ink spaghetti. I have not tried something like this before and it was a very decent price for so many prawns and such a large portion. I would definitely come back and eat this again.

Another commendable dish was the BBQ Beef Burger (RM 27), which had a moist patty and was oozing with sauce and cheese. It was an enjoyable burger and I'd order it again!

Though it might not look it, the Mushroom Pesto Spaghetti (RM 23) was very delicious. The pesto was rich and the wild mushrooms went very well with this dish. This is definitely something the vegetarian diners would enjoy.

And Vine Cafe, seemingly catering to all kinds of palates with its wide variety of dishes, also has something for the pescatarians. The Fish Parmigiana (RM 23) was fresh and the tomato sauce added a refreshing flavour to the dish. However the batter of the fish could have been thinner and lighter.

Of course, without leaving out the true blue carnivores, Vine Cafe's Meat Lova Lova (RM34) pizza won't disappoint. It had ALL types of beef in it - beef ragout, roast beef, beef bacon and beef pepperoni. It was truly very meaty and delicious. The thin crust was also a good choice as it would have been too heavy (what with all the meat).

The Marinara Pizza (RM 37) was probably my favourite of all the pizzas. It was really good value for all the prawns, squid, mussels and crabmeat there was in there. I love marinara and to have it on pizza was great. Seafood seems to be their strong suit here at Vine Cafe.

And finally for desserts, we got to try the chocolate dome! Vine Cafe has not officially rolled this out yet. Inside the chocolate dome is strawberry ice cream and a brownie. Warm chocolate sauce is poured over the dome to reveal the "surprise" inside. However, I felt that the overall dessert would have been better paired with vanilla ice cream rather than strawberry.
