Malgudi Restaurant, Petaling Jaya

Malgudi Restaurant is a small gem hidden in the heart of PJ. It is known for its classic Indian Cuisine, influenced by the Northern and Southern Indian heritage. We were greeted by Aruna Sukumar who has taken over ownership of this cosy restaurant.

Malgudi Restaurant has a split level dining. The top floor is designed to have tables for big groups of family and friends and a great space for private functions, while the lower floor is great for casual dining in smaller groups.

We started of with the Nasi Lemak Briyani (RM17) which was a special of the month. The chicken was soft and succulent with a good Indian twist on Malaysia's iconic national dish.

Next we moved on to the Garlic Naan (RM5) which was served with potatoes and a curry as an accompaniment. The bread was light and fluffy which is a solid starter dish.

The photo above features the Mutton Thali (RM18.90) as the center piece which has 9 small dishes that changes daily according to what the kitchen is cooking up. This is a very common dish to have during the lunch hour rush. It has a mix of meats and vegetables to be eaten with the rice in the middle.

The Chicken Lollypop (RM16) on the far left was one of our favourite dishes, a mix of sweet, salty and a good mouthful of spice.

One of the other dishes Malgudi presented was the Nandu Rasam (RM8) on the far right. It is a sweet, sour and spicy soup from Southern India which has good health benefits. By drinking this soup it increases your immunity system and is a common remedy for coughs and flu.

Next we tasted the iconic Chicken Briyani (RM17) which is a must have in all Indian eateries. Trust us, this is as delicious as it looks on camera.

If you fancy something crispy, the Seval Combo (RM 16) is a mixture of fried bitter gourd and cauliflower, a great sharing platter in the middle of the table.

We ended our meal with the ever so sexy Kulfi dessert (RM7.50). This is simplicity at its best, made in house with local ingredients that was out of this world. We dare say the best Kulfi we have tasted in a very long time. By far, this was the highlight of our meal, quite similar to the Italian Parfait but on an elevated level in flavour profile.

We have to commend Aruna, the owner for working the floor that afternoon which is a rarity these days and she made sure that service was fast and efficient. With her minimalist style in fashion that transcends towards a passion in the food industry, constantly seeking to learn and improve, Malgudi Restaurant is in very good hands. All the curries and sauces here are made from scratch and does not contain and MSG. It wouldn't hurt to have a bit more heat and spice in the dishes.
