Greenhost Boutique Hotel, Yogyakarta
Nowadays, when we search for hotels to stay in, while price does play a small part of our criteria, we also look at many other aspects like location, accessibility, Instagram-worthiness and to a certain extent, sustainability.
Hotels have long been laden with wastage. But this is something Greenhost Boutique Hotel hopes to change. It hopes to lessen its waste and encourage healthy, sustainable practices through its establishment. From what we’ve seen so far, it has.

The first thing you’ll notice upon entering is the sheer amount of green that grows in here, giving the otherwise concrete grey walls a splash of colour and nature. The hotel is also built to allow in plenty of natural sunlight and rainfall to water and nourish the growing plants. This saves it a lot of electricity and water.
You will notice a pool in the middle of the hotel, which also collects the rainwater and filters it for use. When you see how the plants thrive under such circumstances, it’s easy to subscribe to the cause. A bad habit of many, leaving the key in the room to have the air-conditioner running all day, this is discouraged and not practiced here at Greenhost Boutique Hotel.

But one of the most impressive feats of Greenhost Boutique Hotel has to be there rooftop urban garden, which grows produce to be used by the kitchen downstairs! So all the greens you see during breakfast (or lunch and dinner) comes fresh from the roof. That’s as organic as it gets.

If you’re up for it, you can even pick and choose the vegetables you want and bring it down yourself for the kitchen to prepare for you. What impressed me a lot at Greenhost Boutique Hotel is also that they emphasise a lot of focus on heath and wellness. A vegan menu is always available for those who are vegan and healthier options are offered in place of your usual American or English breakfasts.

Greenhost Boutique Hotel and its restaurant Art Kitchen stand out from any other hotel we’ve visited because of its consciousness for the environment as well as for human health. Instead of focusing on churning profits, it seems this (almost always fully booked) hotel has found the perfect ecosystem to support sustainability and profitability.

Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, what we recommend is to just stop by to have a meal at Art Kitchen. We returned TWICE to the hotel after checking out just to eat here! That’s how much we love the food at Art Kitchen. It’s guilt-free dining with affordable prices.

No matter which dish you try here at Art Kitchen, whether it is their tempura basket or their to-die-for meatballs, every dish is executed with excellence.

Meat lovers will also love their lamb lontong (which was a special when we were around). As Art Kitchen serves plenty of walk-in guests, the restaurant functions as a stand-alone establishment despite being part of the hotel. We love that even though they had to serve both hotel guests and the public, everything was well organised to accommodate everyone.

So be sure to drop by Art Kitchen at Greenhost Boutique Hotel in Yogyakarta for a healthy and hearty meal to soothe the tummy and soul.
