Just Heavenly Cafe, Bangsar

Dessert lovers would recognise the name, Just Heavenly for their fine selection of delicious cakes, but did you know that this dessert place cooks up a storm too?

Having been around for 16 years (and counting!), you can trust Allan Yap and Nigel Skelchy, the creative masterminds behind this business for doing what they do best in “Designing Dreams, Serving Pleasure”. It was a pleasure indeed when I had the privilege to be at their flagship cafe recently to peek at what’s in store.

We started off light with some healthy salads. You can definitely taste how fresh the greens are in the char siew chicken salad (RM21) and caesar salad (RM23). The char siew chicken salad was a great combination of grilled chicken generously marinated in their special char siew sauce, while the classic caesar was served with turkey ham and beef bacon. If you don’t eat beef, you could opt for smoked salmon.

For bites, we had salmon spring rolls, fish fingers and pumpkin soup served with garlic bread. I enjoyed the spring rolls and fish fingers very much as it was fried really well and it was not too oily, but if perfection had a taste, it is their garlic bread that you simply must try. The bread was so airy light and crunchy that every bite was love. The pumpkin soup was super creamy and sweet too. So good!

I was blown away when the main courses arrived. I could almost hear the beginning notes of “Be Our Guest” playing in my head (minus the singing, dancing and talking furniture, of course). What we go to try were the Fish and Chips (or wittily known as The One That Got Away), Crab Aglio Olio, Penne Carbonara, Linguine Pesto with smoked chicken, Lamb Burghini, BLT Burger and Curryeggy. I honestly didn’t know where to begin because every plate looked amazing.

The One That Got Away (Fish & Chips)

Crab Aglio Olio (RM32)

Penne Carbonara (RM28)

Linguine Pesto (RM30)

Lamb Burghini (RM34)

Among all, the BLT burger (RM30) really stood out for me. From sinking my teeth into that juicy patty, the burger bun that was soft and the prime Aussie beef which was complimented by the mushroom sauce so well, it was the perfect experience. I must say, I really enjoyed digging into this though I am not typically a burger person.

Curryeggy (RM26) was an interesting discovery too – A bright sunny side up egg garnished with curry leaves, comfortably resting on a puff pastry in a pool of chickpea curry. I would think of this dish as a modern take on our local roti canai. The curry flavour was mild, good for non-spicy palates and the pastry crust was light and flaky. Overall, a yummy combo.

Then came the best part – Desserts! Now at this point, I was already full but it was sight of delight when the Hi-tea Set (RM39) arrived and I immediately gave in to temptation. The 3-tier tea party set carried all sorts of goodies like macarons, chocolate éclairs, scones and sandwiches. For the sweet tooth, you are in for a treat with this one. I would highly recommend that you get this set to try out a little of everything. It will be worth your while.

Play It Again Sam

Rainbow Cheesecake

Of course, we also had some cakes to share. Dressed in swirls of a sweet white pink cream, Play It Again Sam comes in a new 6" round size and packs a punch of goodness with bananas, strawberries and chocolate. The Rainbow Cheesecakes (9" round) makes one happy looking lemon cake that would definitely turn every frown upside down. Believe me, every slice of it melts in your mouth.

I tucked myself into bed that night with a big wide smile and an extremely satisfied belly. Thank you Allan and Nigel for your warm hospitality and big hearts. You both fed us so well. I will be sure to pop by again when I can.
