The Great Beer Bar, Damansara Uptown

If you're keeping up with the craft beer scene in Kuala Lumpur, you've definitely heard about the ever popular Ales & Lagers in Solaris Dutamas that has been a staple for the craft beer community for years.

Looking to further expand and solidfy their mark on the craft beer scene, the owners have have launched a new establishment called The Great Beer Bar that is located right in the heart of the ever bustling Damansara Utama area.

Hailed as PJ's best craft beer bar, they have over 70 different types (and growing!) of craft beer brands to suit your taste profile for your quest to find the perfect brew.

The atmosphere with its grey walls, rustic bricks and wooden fixtures project a minimalist vibe for an unadulterated craft beer experience.

While there are many brands to choose from, we sampled 3 of their current tap offerings carefully chosen by their knowledgeable staff team. If you're unsure or are new to the craft beer scene, simply reach out to any of their staff team and they will happily guide you through their offerings, depending on your taste preference.

As a rule of thumb, it's best to start with milder IPAs and end with more full-bodied Porter / stout variants.

Tuatara Weiz Guy (Hefeweizen)

We kicked things off with the Tuatara Weiz Guy, a mild German-styled craft beer. Hailing from New Zealand, there were hints of unique fruitiness to it; specifically banana and vanilla notes. Its overall appearance being light and cloudy paired with its lower alcohol volume, gives it a less intimidating feel especially for drinkers who are newly venturing into the craft beer scene.

8 Wired Hopwired (IPA)

Next up, we moved on to something a little more potent. The Hopwired IPA is brewed by yet another New Zealand company called 8 Wired. Being an IPA, it has a significantly hoppier taste with higher alcohol volume than the Hefeweizen wheat-based beer. Nevertheless, you can still taste its malty tropical sweetness in every sip but don't be fooled by its delicious taste profile as it will get you buzzing in no time.

Brewlander Respect (Porter)

Finally, to cap things off, we ended with the Brewlander Respect. This for me was the star of the show. If you enjoy darker Porter beers, this is the one for you. It's full-bodied taste with hints of coffee and bitter-sweet notes will guarantee a satisfying experience, especially after a heavy meal or after an intense night out.

It also pays homage to my all time favourite Porter, the Old Engine Oil, with its rich chocolatey taste that is well-balanced by the bitterness of the hops.

What sets The Great Beer Bar apart from others is that they also offer carefully selected bites that pair well with your craft beer experience. Choose from a variety of skewers such as pork belly (RM5), chicken wing / thigh (RM5), mushroom (RM3) and vegetable (RM3).

If you're in town, I highly suggest you pop by and allow them to help your body and soul unwind from the stresses of life.
