Just Pho You, Latest Recipe @ Le Meridien, Kuala Lumpur
Vietnamese cuisine can be described as a balance of the sweet and salty, a great combination between asian and french influences. We were invited to taste a selection of dishes at Le Meridien as they flew in two guest chefs specially from Sheraton Hanoi, Chef Trinh Thi Mau and Nguyen Nam Nguyen to showcase a taste of Vietnam.

The trishaw, which is a familiar symbol in Vietnam, was decorated beautifully at the entrance with traditional Vietnamese music that filled the dining room which set the atmosphere for the night. There was a wide selection of authentic dishes to savour from but here are a few dishes that we thought were enjoyable.

We started out with the prawn rice paper rolls which is part of the staple diet in Vietnam. It was light and refreshing and a good way to start the night.

We moved on to this crispy prawn cakes that were made freshly on the spot for us by the sous chef, which was really delicious. The dipping sauce on the side was quite different from the usual fish sauce as it had thick slices of ginger infused into the sweetened fish sauce and the heat coming from chilies and garlic balanced out the sauce.

One of our favourites was the beef salad and it was tender and juicy. We could tell that it has been grilled to perfection. We loved the heat of the chillies coming through the freshness of the salad components. This was certainly a winner on a hot summer night.

This bowl of steamy Pho beef noodles is Hanoi’s staple dish which is eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The soup is a marriage of Vietnamese rice noodles and the influence of the French meat broth. Overall the broth of the Pho was solid but it probably needed bean sprouts and basil leaves to bring the depth of the dish together.

Next we had prawns steamed with lemongrass and chilli. The flavours came through beautifully and the prawns were sweet and juicy.

We finished off the mains with the seafood curry, which was mild in taste and the seafood was cooked well, altogether a good dish.

Out of the three traditional desserts we decided that the traditional sticky rice dumpling coated in coconut was the winner and the texture was soft and chewy.
Overall the main flavours of Vietnam was well portrayed and if you have been craving some Vietnamese food why not make a booking as this special promotion is only up till this Saturday. Bon Apetit!
