define:food, Midvalley

It isn't often that I can say the food at any one particular establishment has blown me away. There are plenty of F&B places popping up left and right that seem to be capitalising on the Instagram-factor and only offering food that is aesthetically pleasing but fail to impress the tastebuds.

But define:food seems to have it all. Well, almost.

Located right smack in the middle of the ground floor connecting Midvalley Megamall and The Gardens Mall, it has found itself in one of the most prime spots in the area with plenty of foot traffic. With its eye-catching facade, it is hard not to take notice of the place.

While the downstairs is a casual bar or lounge dining concept, the upstairs is where everyone is at. Lit by natural lighting, they could afford to put dark coloured seats by the windows without dampening the interior of the place. The whole place is classy - the kind of place you would be happy to bring a date to or throw a party at.

There are private dining areas cordoned off if you wish to throw a small scale party.

And if you did decide to bring a date or friends here, you can be assured that they would be impressed with your choice of location - simply for the quality of the food. Sure, it may be on the pricier range when it comes to Western dining, but stacked up next to chains like Chilis or Friday's, this place is in a league of its own.

Try the classic mushroom soup (RM18) -- what we loved about it was the truffle oil, which wasn't too overpowering and the crunchy garlic bread.

The Caesar salad (RM26) makes for a good starter as well, but it didn't do much for us. We were eyeing some other starter dishes like the butter milk chicken tenders (RM23) and hand breaded Atlantic crab cakes (RM48), which we will probably come back to try some day.

While the starters may be rather standard fare to discerning diners, the mains will surely impress. We absolutely loved the Provencale seafood risotto (RM48). The seafood was extremely fresh and went beautifully with the tomato based risotto.

Another highlight of the meal was the DF wagyu burger made with 100% wagyu beef (RM42). The perfect medium-rare patty was juicy and thick. The bacon and sharp cheddar went well with it and what brought the whole dish together was their home made BBQ sauce.

While everyone was raving about the risotto, I think what really resonated with me was their salted duck egg pasta (RM33) served with duck bacon. This is by far, one of the best salted egg pastas I have tried across Malaysia and Singapore. Though it may sound like it could end up being quite a "jelak" dish for some, I believed it was just the right amount of creaminess and richness.

Desserts here at define:food are also worth trying. We tried the apple feuille de brick (RM22), which had a light and crunchy texture and wasn't too sweet. It paired so well with the Horlicks ice cream.

But the stand out dessert for me had to be their rendition of the Bombe Alaska (RM30). Instead of the usual rum, this bombe was filled with a pandan coconut ice cream that was so smooth and not sweet at all. The pandan flavours complemented the meringue so well. And it also had a hint of kaya jam in it, which just marries with the pandan so well. This is definitely a must-try here.
