Tony Roma's Incoming Platters

The Festive Season from Thanksgiving to Christmas to New Year's has always been a time for family gatherings, catching up with old friends, and eating way too much food.

Now that 2017 is here, we continue the feasting for Chinese New Year, and then after that it's Valentine's Day, then March 14, then April's Fools and really, every occasion is an excuse to eat!

So, from January to March, Tony Roma's will be introducing the new seasonal platter menu, featuring large portions of regular customer favourites, all to share amongst you and your loved ones.

It being my first time in half a decade since I've visited this establishment, I was quite excited for what was in store for us. It has been a while since I've indulged in some good-ole-American-style diner food.

So first up was the Tony’s Beef Ribs Platter consisting of their Beef Ribs, half a BBQ Chicken, a 10oz NY Strip Steak, three cups of Soup of the Day and three other sides of your choice (RM169). The ribs were tender and really flavourful and it was quickly devoured by the crew I was eating with. The steak, unfortunately was a little lacklustre, especially since I am a fan of marbled fat, the NY strip is just not a part of the beef that I generally enjoy eating.

But the BBQ chicken more than made up for it. With the kitchen having brined said poultry for 12 hours, it was extremely tender and had a wonderful barbecue sauce to accompany it.

The second platter consisted of a Lobster, Grilled Salmon, Shrimp Scampi Pasta, and once again would offer three cups of Soup of the Day and three sides (RM179). The lobster, although rather small, was extremely tasty and fresh. I loved the zesty mayo-cream sauce that matched the firm meat so well, and who can say no to a dipping cup of butter? As for the grilled salmon however, it proved to fall short of expectations as it was overcooked and dry, but the pasta which featured scampi butter and chipotle was probably the most interesting dish to be served that day. It had a strange aftertaste that I was personally not a fan of, but could see how many might enjoy it anyway.

Lastly, out came the Lamb Lover's Platter: it featured Lamb Ribs Roma Rack with Lamb Cevapi, another ½ BBQ Chicken, which again came with three cups of soup and three sides (RM139). Out of the three platters this was probably my least favourite. The Cevapi (sausages) tasted overly peppered and were really dry, the lamb ribs were not as good as the beef ones, so for an extra RM30 (unless you have dietary restrictions) I would suggest to just go ahead with the Beef Ribs Platter.

The one thing that I feel I have to mention tough, is that they do their potato-based sides very, very well. Their mash, baked and sautéed potatoes were all outstanding.

Overall, there were some hits and misses, but for the price that you are paying and the amount of food offered, I definitely think it is worth the try.
