Nestled in Penang's first seafront retail marina, Straits Quay, lies a seafood place that is unbeknownst to the locals to have one of the best fish and chips the island could offer.

Blue Reef Fish & Chips has been around for some time in Georgetown, with a total of two outlets in Penang. Countless recommendations from friends and family members led us here to sample their mouthwatering seafood offerings for ourselves.

For starters, we sampled their Seafood Chowder (RM13). It was brimming with the usual suspects - shrimps and crab - in a thick, creamy soup. I'm picky when it comes to seafood, but the ingredients are very fresh and it definitely got our appetite going for what was next.

The next dish was something we were most excited about. It had all my favourite seafood combined into one amazing platter. The Seafood Galore Garoupa Platter (RM42) presents itself as a tempting combination of scallops, prawns, calamari rings, fish fillet, a side of salad and of course, some good ol' chips. A perfect dish if you are a big eater (like me) or if you have a party of 2 or 3 to share this platter of goodness.

The fried grouper (smothered either in beer batter or bread crumbs, it's up to you) is one of their all-time greats and didn't disappoint. Another thing to highlight is the awesome calamari rings. You know that they use the freshest possible calamari out there when there's a 'crunch' as soon as you bite it. Definitely a highlight dish for the meal.

If you're looking for a 'healthier' option, the Grilled Halibut Fish Fillet (RM36) is the way to go. Laced with tasty garlic mashed potatoes, sauteed vegetables and béarnaise sauce, this dish will definitely satisfy your cravings for seafood, especially since the fresh halibut is grilled to perfection. My personal favourite is the garlic mashed potatoes as the flavours combined really well with the halibut.

Pasta lovers will appreciate the Spicy Linguini Seafood Marinara (RM21) that harmoniously combines a diverse mix of seafood in chunky tomato sauce. Some fresh chilli tops it all off and gives the dish a fiery bang.
