Pizza Express, Scotts Square

The world famous Pizza Express has ventured into Singapore’s market, opening their first outlet in the heart of Orchard district, Scotts Square. Their first ever outlet, which has been operating since 1965 is in Soho, London. We were fortunate to attend the media tasting to try out some of their highly raved about pizzas.

Currently, the restaurant in Singapore can accommodate up to 120 patrons and is decorated with marble-designed tables and chairs to add to their sophisticated exterior yet family-friendly outlook. This is a great place for family dinners and group gatherings.

We were given a chance to watch the chef in action, Chef Fey Foo, the head chef, who has had 22 years of experience in the culinary industry. We later got the chance to get our hands dirty with Chef Fey Foo, who taught us how to make our own pizzas!

The secret to the perfect pizza is in the dough, he says. Every pizza chef in Pizza Express has to go through 12 weeks of training in-hand stretching and tossing the dough before officially becoming a pizza chef.

We started with their dough ball “PizzaExpress” ($6). Their dough balls are balled-up with the same pizza base, baked and served with three different sauces - garlic butter, pesto Siciliano and pesto Genovese. We all agreed that the garlic butter dip was the best.

After the starters, we were served the signature Calabrese ($26), which is Pizza Express’ iconic rectangular pizza. The ready-made pizza consists of Calabria-style sausage, spicy Italian sausage, mozzarella, jalapeño, roasted peppers and red chillies, finished with pesto, rocket and Grana Padano. There were so many flavours in each bite that we took. Every bite crunched as I sunk my teeth into the golden brown pizza crust.

But the star of the show was definitely the Chilli Crab pizza (~ $26), which brought on a lovely local twist to the classic Italian dish. The pizza is topped with a specially-made combination of chilli and passata sauce, crab meat and claws as well as mantou bun bits. It is then richly covered in mozzarella cheese, drizzled with egg mixture, garlic oil and chilli oil, then baked to a heavenly perfection. This is a must-try for chilli crab lovers.

These are just a few of the scrumptious ready-made pizzas in Pizza Express. For those who are particular about what goes into your pizza, you can opt to customise your own with your preferred toppings and sauces.

For those of you who are more food conscious (and have better self-control over pizzas), Pizza Express offers a variety of salads and pasta. We tried one of their healthier dishes, the Legara superfood ($13/$20). This huge plate of wholesome goodness came with mixed salad, cucumbers, avocados, lentils, fresh mozzarella, butternut squashes, beetroot, basil leaves, balsamic syrup and pine kernels.

The next dish we had was the Farfalle di Calabria ($22). This flavoursome pasta dish is cooked in a creamy pomodoro sauce with spicy Italian sausages, salami with fresh basil, Grana Padano and cherry tomatoes. Bow-tie pasta was used, making the dish look extra pretty! This dish would be perfect for those who love tangy tomato-based pasta.

Pizza Express is a must-try for all pizza lovers out there! As said by Pizza Express, “the magic starts when you order”. We can truthfully stand by that statement! We will definitely be going back again soon to try out their other pizza. I heard their chicken satay pizza is pretty magical too!
