Tsukiji No.8, Kuala Lumpur
"If locals eat there, it must be good!" These wise words certainly rang true for Tsukiji No.8, who had a large table of Japanese-speaking patrons enjoying their meal as we walked into the quaint Japanese restaurant. It was as if we were transported to Tokyo, with Tsukiji No.8's wait staff bringing dish after dish of fresh Japanese seafood, as if it was fresh from the Tsukiji Market itself! One of the highlights was the Ebi Tempura (RM38) that was beautifully plated and featur

MAI by Dashi Master Marusaya, Bukit Pasoh Road
MAI by Dashi Master Marusaya is another authentic Japanese eatery to call Singapore home. The focus here is dashi, a Japanese soup/cooking stock used as the base for many Japanese food. Here, you can expect all-natural dashi made from special aged bonito and quality konbo. Like most premium Japanese restaurants in Singapore, expect all their ingredients to come direct from Japan. This is the third restaurant in Singapore from the Marusaya group – the first two are Dashi Maste

Una Una, Bugis+
I love Japanese food. But at the very top of my most favourite Japanese food list is unagi. And Singapore is blessed to have some of the best unagi restaurants from Japan. None of them however, can beat the prices at Una Una in Bugis+. One small serving of Hitsumabushi will only set you back $9.80++. You can upgrade to the regular size bowl for $14.80++, or go double portion if you’re hungry at $19.80++. That’s already cheaper than most Hitsumabushi in Singapore that usually

Sushiro, Tiong Bahru Plaza
If you love kaiten-sushi (“conveyor-belt sushi”), you will be delighted to know that Japan’s top-reigning kaiten-sushi restaurant, Sushiro, has recently launched in Singapore at Tiong Bahru Plaza! With a perpetual fondness for all things Japanese (plus Sushiro has such a prominent reputation in Japan), we were definitely excited to see what Sushiro has in store for us for its initial local launch. A stunning preview of what Sushiro has to offer. Sushiro's seating capacity of

MAI by Dashi Master Marusaya, Bukit Pasoh
If the very idea of drinking a hearty dashi broth strikes you as a choice meal, MAI by Dashi Master Marusaya is the latest go-to establishment along Bukit Pasoh Road. For those who don't know, dashi is an indispensable Japanese soup stock served since the 17th century Edo period. Dashi only uses one or two ingredients and takes just 20 minutes to make, unlike other cuisines where soup stocks are made from an assortment of ingredients boiled over several hours. Dashi is key to

New menu @ Sun with Moon Japanese Dining & Cafe, Wheelock Place
In conjunction with their 14th anniversary in Singapore, acclaimed Japanese restaurant Sun with Moon is introducing brand new dishes to their menu with a fresh twist on some classic favourites. It has only been a few months since our last visit to Sun and Moon, but we were excited to try the latest additions to the restaurant. We started with a serving of Kaisen Yukke ($13.80) with crunchy seaweed on the side. Freshly-diced salmon, tuna and yellowtail sashimi tossed in a rich

Kushikatsu Tanaka, Clarke Quay
Clarke Quay’s Kushikatsu Tanaka (串カツ田中) is actually part of a popular Japanese chain of restaurants. It’s most famous for its Osaka-style kushikatsu deep fried cutlet skewers and signature special dipping sauce. What makes Kushikatsu Tanaka stand out is the secret family recipe — a unique blend of oil with beef fats is used to fry their kushikatsu coated in finely ground panko (Japanese style bread crumbs). The panko flour, batter and sauces are sourced from Japan, which mean

Puri Puri, Beach Road
We were invited by the lovely folks from Quandoo on a quaint weekday evening to take a look at what Puri Puri has to offer. Having worked up an appetite getting to Puri Puri from Bugis MRT station (it was a short 15 minute stroll), we were pleasantly surprised to find that it was a quaint hole-in-the-wall café that shares its space with a lighting store, Verde Light. And true to its establishment, Puri Puri has great ambient lighting complementing its hipster vibes, creati

Miyagawa Unagiya Icinoji, Robertson Quay
Leading up to my graduation trip to Japan, I have been researching and coming up with a list of restaurants to visit when I’m there. Turns out I got to experience Miyagawa Honten earlier than I expected! Miyagawa is unveiling its very first outlet outside Japan right here in Singapore. With its outlet in Meguro-ku, Tokyo recently awarded the Bib Gourmand in Michelin Guide, I had very high expectations of their Unagi. Upon entering the restaurant, I immediately felt like I ste

Kouzu, Bangsar
As you enter the corner lot in which Kouzu sits, you are greeted by a large dragon. It is not a scary dragon, but rather one that is beautifully painted on a stretch of Kouzu's wall. It sits next to paintings of Mount Fuji, Sakura flowers, koi fish and a geisha. The spectacular graffiti wall certainly does make an impression, and it sets the tone of Kouzu being artistically modern while still holding onto Japanese culture. Opened just a month ago, Kouzu is the latest Japanese

If you are an indecisive eater like myself, Emporium Shokuhin is definitely a place to consider when you are stumped, not knowing what to eat. Emporium Shokuhin is probably the only place in Singapore to always offer a series of amazing 1-for-1 deals. I was lucky enough to check out a piece of what some of the restaurants had to offer, and here are some of my thoughts.
