Specialty & Fine Food Asia 2018

With just about a month to go, we're really looking forward to Speciality & Fine Food Asia 2018. It is the second time this exhibition is going on in Singapore and after its success last year with 161 exhibitors and close to 3,000 visitors, it's exciting to see what this year will have in store. The trade-only event in Suntec City highlights some of the best fine food purveyors in the region, connecting the relevant players all under one roof during this 3-day event. As foodies, we're always on the lookout for the best restaurants, cafes and establishments offering only the best. Which is why it falls on the shoulders of these business owners to elevate their businesses to the next level. Ch

New ramen offerings at Tsuta Ramen, Orchard Road

Tsuta is back again with two brand new ramen in their menu – the Tori Paitan Soba, a chicken ramen, that comes in both original and spicy options. Along with these new ramen, there are some new side dishes for you to try out too! These new additions will be on the menu from 29 June 2018 (Friday). Now let’s take a look at some of the new offerings. First, we had the Edamame ($4.80), which basically is a bowl of boiled peas. BUT NO! This is so much more. As a lover of this healthier snack option, I really enjoyed this and would definitely be coming back for more. The peas are specially brought in from Japan, boiled, and seasoned with a mixture of crunchy Mongolian rock salt and pepper to give

Klook Launch In Malaysia: Our Experience Using It

Before Klook officially launched in Malaysia, I had already been using the app. It was my first visit to Siem Reap (it’s my goal to tick off all the ASEAN countries by 2020!) and something that came highly recommended was a visit to Phare, the Cambodian circus. After waking up at 4AM to catch our 6:40AM Airasia flight from Kuala Lumpur to Siem Reap, we arrived at about 9AM local time. It was a little too early to check in, so we went into town to look for coffee and also to enjoy the Old Market. Once we could check-in, I spent the rest of the day sleeping and suddenly jolted our of bed at 6:30PM remembering I had booked tickets for Phare through the Klook app while I was still in KL and it w

The Victorian English Afternoon Tea at L'Espresso, Goodwood Park Hotel, Singapore

There's no need to crash Mad Hatter's tea party anymore. From now till 22 July 2018, you can head down to L'Espresso for a Victorian English Afternoon Tea. Nestled in an iconic hotel on Scotts Road that dates back to 1900s, this is the perfect place to treat yourself to an elegant experience. Flying the Union Jack on the highlights of the Victorian Afternoon Tea, L'Espresso allows guests to enjoy classic English favourites by bringing a piece of England to the table. I started the feast with the Coronation Chicken with Mango Chutney and Almonds Open-faced Sandwich. I found this to be an interesting creation with an overpowering mango taste, making it the perfect bite-sized snack for mango lo

Tamoya Udon's new Tonkotsu Specials

There is something insatiable about Singaporeans and Japanese food that we can’t seem to get enough of it. And today, we are back here again at one of Asia’s most popular Udon chains, Tamoya Udon. Nestled within Liang Court, this establishment provides a fuss-free casual dining experience with savoury Japanese udon noodles at super value prices. With this being our fourth visit here, we got to try their newly launched Tonkotsu Specials. (You can check out our previous reviews on Tamoya Udon here, here and here) These bowls are served piping hot and contain rich, flavourful broths that will whet your appetite, leaving you wanting more. In this series, we got to try out two new flavours. We be

Meme Tea&Coff, Plaza Arkadia

Located in Desa Parkcity, Meme Tea&Coff has a beautiful high-ceiling and a generally sophisticated vibe to its cafe. It's unique selling point is that it boasts an interesting range of creative drinks on its menu. I'm guessing that due to the complexity of the ingredients in the drinks, you might have to wait a while for them. I waited about 20 minutes for mine. (From right to left) I tried the Mango Yoghurt drink (RM18.90) which was mango puree with yoghurt and mango chunks. Apparently Meme uses fresh fruits for its drinks so yay Meme! It tasted like mango lassi with mango chunks inside. Quite enjoyable I must say. I also tried their Meme Fruit Tea (RM13.90), which was not excessively sweet

New Line Up of Desserts at Bakerzin

Have you ever went to a restaurant and thought to yourself, “Why can't I just have desserts for dinner today.”? Well I got to live that fantasy at Bakerzin as they introduce an assortment of new desserts for 2018, including a few classic signatures that you can’t go wrong with. Starting with some of the new desserts, one of my favourites was Miss Berry Ruby ($8). This glistening red block of mousse cake was nice and tangy and wasn’t too sweet, with the hint of hazelnut and chocolate ice-cream really balanced the sourness. If you like your tang a little more subtle, the Berry Crumble ($9) would be a perfect choice. The buttery crumble and almonds to add savouriness to the berry filling. Paire

Locavore, Glasgow South Side

When I lived in the South Side of Glasgow two years ago, I used to do my grocery shopping at a nearby neighbourhood grocer that stocked vegetables of different varieties, fresh farm chicken and duck eggs, as well as meats from ethical farms. It was my go-to grocer for non-packaged foods and fresh produce. So, I was super happy to learn that their business has now flourished and grown into something much bigger and better! Locavore was once a small space in Nithsdale Road, but has now grown to a large local organic grocer located on Victoria Road. During their launch event, I was surprised to see their the physical shop itself has increased about 5 times its original size and now has its

Kintsugi Robatayaki, Petaling Jaya

I walked into Kintsugi Robatayaki thinking it will be just another typical Japanese restaurant, but boy was a wrong. Kintsugi is far from traditional, the team of cooks have transformed Japanese cuisine into a modern masterpiece that is unpredictable and exciting. I love that they named this robatayaki restaurant Kintsugi, which is translated as "golden repair". Kintsugi is a Japanese artform where they repair broken pottery with lacquer dusted with gold, making it beautiful again. The team at Kintsugi flourishes in their artwork, from their beautiful Japanese inspired murals in the restaurant to the gorgeous plating of their dishes. The first dish we had, the Truffle Bonsai (RM33), really s

Affordable Thai food at Took Lae Dee, Tai Seng

Took Lae Dee is one of Thailand's most sought after 24hour chain outlet that serves authentic and traditional Thai food. Took Lae Dee opened its first overseas chain outlet in the East of Singapore and is smacked right in the middle of an industrial estate in Tai Seng. Yes it may be out of the way for some but this off the beaten location doesn't seem to stop hungry customers from indulging in some Thai goodness. Although this is a self-service establishment, Took Lae Dee is perfect for a convenient and fresh meal on a busy work day, Took Lae Dee which literally means good and cheap in Thai, definitely lives up to its name. We were pretty impressed with the menu spread and its affordable pri

Otto's Deli Fresh, Holland Village

Raffles Holland V Mall opened not long ago, but with the big “Raffles Medical” sign at the top, most would just think that it’s a healthcare centre. But what you don’t know is that there are hidden treasures within this mall. One of which is Otto’s Deli Fresh, a new dining establishment by Chef Otto Weibel. Born in Switzerland, Chef Otto has been serving out delights since 1973, when he first arrived in Singapore to work at the Shangri-la Hotel. And we got a taste of the new menu featuring a meat platter as well as three delightful steaks that were cooked to medium perfection. The Butcher Platter($22) was served on a wooden paddle, with a selection of cold meat cuts. There were plenty to cho

Birch, DC Mall

Birch, DC Mall is a new hip restaurant that’s making waves in the Damansara Heights neighbourhood. As you step into the establishment, you will be immersed in a relaxed and laid-back setting, reminiscent of the many famous restaurants and bars in West Hollywood. The good people behind Birch who happen to be creators of well-known establishments such as Huckleberry, Mezze and Skullduggery really know how to set the tone for their customers and they have done a really good job with Birch. The establishment serves a dual purpose, with a full-fledged bar serving delicious cocktails and a restaurant with an extensive menu focusing on freshness and bold modern-American flavours with hints of Peruv

ANTE Set Lunch Menu 2018

ANTE, our favourite restaurant for pork steak is back at it again, with a new set lunch menu for 2018! Now, you can also enjoy their tantalizing dishes for lunch while going easy on your wallet. Here's what's new for their 2018 Set Lunch Menu. We'll start off with their Small Plates sections. These sides are appropriately sized and are perfect for sharing or it can also act as something light to accompany your mains. Mushroom Soup (RM9.50) A lunch set is never complete without a good hot bowl of mushroom soup. ANTE's rendition of this classic soup is one of the best out there as it is freshly made with wild mushroom (that you can actually taste, not like those instant mushroom soups out ther

Montigo Resorts Seminyak Spa

When you imagine getting a massage at a resort or hotel, you don’t expect a treatment with such authenticity of Montigo Resorts, Seminyak’s Spa. Firstly, keeping to its Balinese roots, the spa has put its focus on Balinese elements in its interior as well as traditional Balinese treatments. What I like about the spa is that they make their own oils for treatment, which means they know exactly what is going into the products used on your skin. You can ask the knowledgeable staff anything about their products and they’re ready to answer. There are 8 treatment rooms here - 4 single rooms and 4 couple rooms that come with attached bathrooms. There is also a room specially for Thai massages and a

Montigo Resorts Seminyak, Bali

It’s been a very long time since my last visit to Bali - about 12 years to be exact. And my last memory of it was Kuta Beach, quiet and peaceful after the unfortunate Bali bombing in 2005. Coming back to Bali again after so long was like visiting the place for the very first time. I didn’t know what to expect. Especially since this time, we would be staying in Seminyak, rather than Kuta. We were graciously hosted by Montigo Resorts Seminyak during our stay in Bali and man, what a beautiful resort it is! Bright hues of blue welcome you as you enter the compound. A swimming pool that is open to the public is one of the first things you see, right in between the lobby and TIIGO restaurant. Lush

Sinfonia Ristorante, Victoria Concert Hall, Singapore

"Sinfonia", the italian word for Symphony, is the most appropriate word to describe this new culinary voyage Sinfonia Ristorante has to offer. Formerly known as FOO'D by Davide Oldani, Sinfonia has undergone a branding revamp by offering its guests a new unique gastronomic experience through contemporary Italian cuisine. In the hands of Chef Simone Depalmas, who is of Sardinian descent with over 21 years of experience, guests are sure to be awed by his culinary skills along with his artistic creations. To start off the evening, I had three starters. First up was the Truffle Chicken Liver Brûlée, Leek, Local Herbs, Roasted Focaccia ($26.00). What I liked most about this dish was the idea of h

Morton's of Chicago, Singapore New Seasonal Menu

Morton's of Chicago, the Steakhouse is famed for it's generous portions of all-American classic steaks. Its reputation around the region for the quality of their food and service left me with very high expectations of this place. Greeted with a beautiful ambiance and a generous glass of martini on my first visit here, I was anticipating a wonderful night ahead. Morton's will be introducing their new seasonal menu, which will be available from 19 April for a limited time only. To start the night, we were served the Burrata, Grilled Asparagus & Baby Heirloom Tomato Salad ($32++). Cheese lover or not, this dish is perfect for all, as it does not have a strong "cheesy" smell nor aftertaste, allo

Siamese Cat, Novena Square

Thailand is known for it's vibrant food culture, some may even call it their go to comfort food. Zaan Soh, who is the owner of Siamese Cat is no stranger to this cuisine. Prior to opening her first outlet, Zaan spent a good amount of time travelling to Thailand and her love affair with this particular cuisine inspired her to open her very own affordable Thai joint in Singapore. The interior of the outlet has a very simple layout and colourful floor tiles, which makes it feel as if you are right in Thailand! The best part about this place is that most of the staff are Thai and friendly. Over here, you'd have to head to the counter to place your orders and pay them before they serve you. We st

Giggles & Geeks, Cyberjaya

Photo by Melvin | Giggles & Geeks Bar + Restaurant Giggles and Geeks is one of the rare spots in Cyberjaya to hang out at. And they are also the 1st in Cyberjaya to get their darts license! Interestingly enough, Giggles & Geeks originated from a stem cell company based in Cyberjaya, with a team who enjoyed experimenting on food & beverage. And here’s what they came up with! Photo by Melvin | Exterior of Giggles & Geeks During our visit, we got to try many of their food and beverages and I have to give credit to their staff for being super nice and friendly while we were there. Photo by Melvin | Geek’s Creamy Salmon Spaghetti RM 25.50 First off, we tried their Chef recommended Geek’s Creamy S
