WonderLOL Open-mic Night, Bangsar

My friends and I like spending our free nights watching stand-up comedies and just laughing our hearts out. Laughter is the best medicine, they say. And indeed it's a great way to wind down from a stressful week at work. This Thursday (3 August), Wonder Upstairs is back with another series of a night full of laughter featuring Malaysia's first Chindian (Chinese-Indian) comedian, Gajen Nad. WonderLOL's monthly open-mic night is hosted by the ever popular Kavin Jayaram and Phoon Chi Ho. Apart from being Malaysia's first Chindian comedian, Gajan also organised Monash University's first ever comedy show that opened to full house of 250 people from over 10 different countries. Gajan has even made

Clutch Chicken, Bethnal Green, London

We had the pleasure of trying Clutch's own Boozy Brunch. For only £25 you can choose a dish from their brunch menu and enjoy free flows of Bloody Marys, Proseccos or Mimosas! I think this is a very reasonable price of unlimited booze and brunch given that I have had some places charge £22 for just unlimited booze and you'd have to fork out another £12 - £15 for their mains. Their Bloody Mary was my favourite drink out of the three! It was everything you'd want in one and more! Sesame seeds garnished the rim of the glass, adding a nice crunch against this thicker cocktail. A whole birds-eye chilli in the drink definitely added a spicy kick with every sip. I felt that the Mimosa and Prosecco w

Balans Soho Society, Clapham Common, London

Balans Soho Society's collection of restaurants opened up a new spot at Clapham Common and we just had to head down south of the river to check out their lovely restaurant! It has a nice outdoor seating area for customers to take in the summer sunshine and enjoy their meal outside. The interior of the restaurant is beautifully designed by Simon Costin, the famous fashion show set designer, who made his name creating dramatic sets for Alexander McQueen. The Pear and Port Martini (£11) was delicious and strong. You can clearly taste both ingredients with every sip. This was my favourite drink out of the two that we tried. The Suco Brasiliero (£9.50) was garnished with dehydrated pineapples and

Neo Bistro, London

Neo Bistro was just opened in June by Alex Harper from the Harwood Arms and Mark Jarvis from Anglo. They took their technique and skills to a more informal setting here at Neo Bistro. The atmosphere was relaxed and minimalistic, not overly fussy or stuffy. We sat down and ordered a few cocktails to start off our journey into this new movement. The Mezcal Margherita (£9) was a beautiful sight to behold and a wonderfully strong drink. The rim was garnished with dried hisbiscus and salt, which contrasted well with the refreshing and strong margherita (how prettily fuchsia it is didn't hurt either hehe). The Thyme Sour (£8) was also pleasing - minimal but different. An herb sprig gently laid acr

A'Challtainn Fish Restaurant and Bar, East Glasgow

Photo by Samad | The indoor courtyard within the Barras Art and Design, where A'Challtainn is nicely located Within the new and funky Barras Art and Design space lies a seafood treasure that is worth hunting for! A'Challtainn is a seafood restaurant nestled in the east side of Glasgow, amongst the historic Barras market. I went over with my friend for lunch and to catch the V. William vs Muruguza Wimbledon final match on Saturday -- yes, they were displaying the finals live on a huge LED screen in the arched glass courtyard space! Photo by Samad | This is the view from the indoor space on the mezzanine floor Speaking of space, let me tell you a little about what beautiful interior design

Juice Station, Perth

With most of us on-the-go daily, picking up a cold-pressed juice seems like a quicker and more convenient way to add more fruits and vegetables into our lives while reaping the benefits and rewards. Initially, I had questioned these marketers that claim replacing meals with these magic potions are necessary to allow your digestive system to take a break. However, after meeting with Juice Station's owner and hearing her side of the story, I learned to appreciate the goodness of this concept. Pahnan Dear said she felt that she needed to start this business after her terminally ill husband made a miraculous recovery from an Inflammatory Bowel Disease following his daily consumption of cold pres

The Prep Room, Sri Hartamas

As we entered this cosy cafe on a bright sunny day, somehow we had a hunch that we were in for a treat. The owners of the establishment, Zaki and his wife, Kuan Ling greeted us as if we were entering into their home. What first caught our attention was the artwork displayed throughout the cafe and the intricate illustration of the menu which was produced by Zaki. The couple who used to be from the banking sector entered into the F&B business with vigour and passion with hopes to produce the best combination of flavours from their childhood memories and Thai influences. The new menu is a reflection of Kuan Ling’s personality and the love that has been put into the food is ever so evident. We

Antoinette, Mandarin Gallery

I've been hearing people rave a lot about Antoinette and have been wanting to give it a try. Finally, I got the chance to try out Antoinette and lucky me, they have just launched their latest collection of Castella Cakes that are now available at Antoinette, Mandarin Gallery from 22nd July onwards! Chef Pang is the mastermind behind these mouthwatering Castella Cakes, and he has even brought his own interpretation into them. Let's have a look on the different flavours available below. Vanilla - A classic vanilla flavoured Castella cake, which was really simple, smooth and light. Perfect for those of you who are a little less adventurous. Earl Grey Cheese - While I thought the Earl Grey cake

The BBP, Bandar Utama

The BBP or The Big Black Pig is the friendly neighbourhood restaurant bar that you go to to unwind and relax after a long day. Its breezy, open air design with wooden and rattan furniture gives a relaxed atmosphere that makes you feel like you're on a holiday island, rather than in the middle of busy Bandar Utama! The BBP serves all things pork, from pork ribs, pork knuckle, pork sausages, pork pizza, pork burger to a variety of pork pastas. But they also have chicken and lamb dishes as well! We first tried The BBP's signature pork ribs The Big Black Spaniard (RM88 for 400g). I always loved the taste of Iberico pork which gives a rich, meaty and complex flavour because of the grass, herbs an

10 O'clock Cookie Bakery Café, Masterton, New Zealand

Awarded as the best bakery in New Zealand (2016), 10 O’clock Cookie Bakery Café has a lot to live up to! Many take a detour through Masterton when travelling through the Wairarapa just to savor their sweet treats. And from my experience, it is 100% worth the effort! And it’s not a very hard place to find, just look for the busiest café on the street! As soon as you enter the bakery, you are greeted with cabinets upon cabinets of deliciousness! Cakes, pastries and cookies fill one cabinet; wraps, sandwiches and quiches fill another; and hot pies fill yet another. They also have a corner dedicated to freshly baked breads and whole cakes, and even a chiller for gelato. You are spoilt for choice

Ippudo Mohamed Sultan, Singapore

I believe that when it comes to Japanese food, everyone has their favourite joint to head to. One of mine is Ippudo, for their amazing ramen, of course! So when Ippudo announced that they were introducing a new and exciting menu -- only at the Mohamed Sultan outlet and for a limited time only -- I just had to check it out. From now till 30 September 2017, make your way down to Ippudo at Mohamed Sultan road to check these three new tsukeman dishes out. From what I heard, even the Japanese are flocking over to Ippudo just for a taste of home. What is tsukeman? You'd hardly find this dish in Japanese restaurants here. In essence, it's a sort of dipping noodle (similar to soba, but with thicker

Japan Food Town, Wisma Atria

The Japan Food Town in Wisma Atria is a place where Singaporeans are able to sink their teeth into authentic Japanese cuisine. And from now till 10 August, Japan Food Town will be celebrating its 1st anniversary. Located at the 4th level in Wisma Atria, Japan Food Town comprises 16 different Japanese restaurants. If you love Japanese food, here is where you should be! Nothing catches my attention like seeing a one-for-one deal. And lucky for us, every week, a different restaurant in Japan Food Town will be giving out this sweet deal. Plus, they will also be having special events every weekend! Don’t forget to hashtag #JFT1Anniversary on Facebook and Instagram to stand a chance to win a set o

Nasi Lemak Korner, Mosman Park Perth

"Good food brings back great memories" was what came to mind throughout my visit at the authentic Malaysian-inspired outlet in Mosman Park. Welcoming us outside the restaurant, was a "kampung style" comic mural plastered on the wall, and a Nasi Lemak bungkus icon representing the "A" in Nasi Lemak Korner. Upon entering, we were greeted by two cheery staff and we chose to sit at a cosy area that resembled a tropical rainforest. Not long after, our drinks and starters arrived. I decided to order their signature Teh Tarik Madu ($8) comprising teh tarik (pulled tea), chocolate ice cream and topped with local honey. Let's just say I was smiling ear to ear before even having tasted any food. My pa

Maguro Donya, Suntec City Mall

I love my sashimi and sashimi, of course, is always done best by authentic Japanese places. At Maguro Donya, they have sashimi brought to the table by their own team of fish trawlers back in Japan. Instead of the typical freezing for export when the fish dies after catching, how they catch their fish and maintain its freshness is by freezing them alive at minus 60 degrees celsius right upon catching them, which is probably the freshest you can get to catching the fish yourself. We've looked into some of their amazing offerings, and I can understand why Maguro Donya received a mention in the 2017 Michelin Guide. I started off with their Five Cut Sashimi ($51.90++). Presented in a really aesth

Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle, Singapore

I bet some of you have noticed that the weather here has been a bit chilly lately with it raining almost everyday. So what's the best thing to eat on a cold rainy evening? Hot pot, of course! Or steamboat, as we call it here. Put aside the usual China-style hot pot buffets as well as the expensive ones with super long queues, and check out Wah Kee Big Prawn Noodle, a unique hot pot joint with (I swear!) one of the best broths ever. I did some digging and found out that this place uses broth from their much-beloved prawn noodles. And if you're thinking that this place sounds super familiar, it cause you've probably heard of it before. Wah Kee has been around for 66 years and its main outlet i

Modern Society, DC Mall

Damansara Heights has been fast growing as one of the hotspots in KL to hang out in. Growing up in this neighbourhood, we have seen the likes of Decanter and Aliyaa stay on for decades without much competition. But of late, many restaurants, gastrobars and cafes have popped up here, pushing the food scene to greater standards. When I first heard of Modern Society, I was unsure of what to expect. It seemed like a catchy name and with not much to go by except for its address, I was in for a nice surprise when we went there for dinner one weekday evening. As you approach the welcoming facade of the place, you cannot imagine how big the inside would be. But we entered the palatial interior of th

Whip Up, Kuala Lumpur

Whip Up is my new favourite dessert place! Not only are the desserts absolutely gorgeous, it also tastes as good as it looks. This newly opened dessert cafe is located in the middle of the city, just behind Berjaya Times Square, so it is very central and relatively easy get to. Chef Tee's mission is simple, to make the world a sweeter place. And he does just that! Whip Up's desserts range from the classics to the unique. To be honest, there is not one dessert on the menu that I wouldn't try. They all sound amazing! We tried the Battle for Peace-tachio (RM18) which has layers of chocolate sponge, mousse, raspberry coulis, and a pistachio heart. It is then topped with a shiny chocolate glacé.
