Botanica+Co, Bangsar South

Dining in the park is something Malaysians don't do often because of the humid weather. It is not exactly glamorous to dress up in a pretty summer dress, lay out a picnic mat and just melt in the scorching tropical heat that we have in this part of the world. Thankfully, the founders of Botanica+Co (also the same owners of Botanica Deli just next to it) understand our pain and decided to create a comfortable indoor park-like atmosphere for diners to allow them to feel like they are having a picnic. The huge glass panels allow for natural light to enter the premises - giving it a very bright and airy feel. The wood panels and plenty of trees inside and around the restaurant make you feel like

Intersect By: Clon, Klang

Situated inside Klang's newest boutique hotel, LAX Boutique Hotel, Intersect By: Clon breathes fresh life into Klang's old town centre. Moving from Section 12, Petaling Jaya, their new location in Klang is a little out of the way for PJ-folk like me but the food is definitely worth the visit. I could sit at Intersect: By Clon the whole day. I love the bright colours and bold statement pieces (check out the hanging ladder with lights!), smooth jazz music wafting out of the speakers and the large windows that are perfect to just watch the world pass by on a lazy afternoon. For starters, I tried Clon's Vietnamese Pizza (RM13 for 8 pizza slices) which is mince chicken, cheese, egg with Clon's se

Streat Thai, Jaya One

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Jaya One's The School is a street (or should I say Streat) Thai joint that is the perfect hangout spot for a casual night out. The restaurant is open-aired, breezy and has a large projector screen that is perfect for watching live sports matches! Not only does Streat Thai have an incredibly extensive menu, but judging from the number of Thai customers, the food is authentic too! It is also pork-free. All 15 chefs here are from different Thai provinces, specialising in their respective Thai dishes. The owners travel to Thailand often to get inspiration for their menu. And during a recent trip, they tried the popular Tom Yum Porridge in Bangkok and decided to b

Cafe Studio, Kota Damansara

Making good coffee is an art, so it was a great experience to watch coffee artists at work in an actual art studio. Cafe Studio in Kota Damansara is a modern art space featuring local artists as well as a gorgeous cafe. The vibe here is laidback and it is easy to spend a whole Sunday afternoon lazing here. Though it has the fittings of a museum, it carries the warmth of a friendly neighbourhood cafe. Walking around Cafe Studio is never boring because you are engaging in thought-provoking art while also piquing your senses with freshly brewed coffee and lovingly crafted meals. We tried a few dishes and drinks here at Cafe Studio. It started off pretty gentle with a pot of passionfruit tea. A

Pho Street, Paradigm Mall

Pho Street opened its first outlet in Malaysia to excite your taste buds with the distinctly fresh and vibrant flavours that it is known and loved for. We were eager for a taste of some Vietnamese street cuisine. We started with fresh summer rolls with prawn, pork belly & fresh herbs. I love the resilient texture of the skin, while the overall taste was very fresh and light, a perfect dish for a starter. Next, we had sesame rice crackers with fragrant minced meat and spices dip belly that provided a nice meaty taste and heavier texture in contrast with the summer rolls. We also had rice crackers served with salad. The tangy mango and the fresh prawns fused well with the wholesome taste of po

D'Legends, TTDI

D'Legends is no stranger to the TTDI neighbourhood. It is a regular watering hole for residents. It is known for its floor-to-ceiling posters of legends. In a recent revamp, the bar now boasts new lighting and a ventilation system that allows for better airflow. But more than just that, their new menu is something worth making it your regular go-to place for dinner and drinks. They also boast the perfect serve of Guinness and Tiger. In fact, the Tiger pour is award-winning. For someone who doesn't fancy beer, I could tell the difference and actually enjoyed every drop of Tiger I had. Of course, like all drinking sessions, it is best when paired with amazing beer food. We got to try the chick

The Canteen, Da Men Mall USJ

The Canteen is an all-new, one-stop food destination for local foodies. Far from your typical food court, The Canteen is touted to be a slightly higher scaled but still down-to-Earth spot for food and drinks. Prices here are not just reasonable, they actually give hawker centres a run for their money, especially with the quality of the food and the chilled out ambiance you get here. The Canteen is split into strategic sections to allow for different types of diners to feel at home here. The Youth section caters to the nearby students who like to come and enjoy some food and drinks while studying and doing assignments together. Not too far off from it is the children's play area where they ca

With all the food reviews and media invites lined up every week, indigestion and other gastrointestinal problems is bound to follow. Not to mention weight gain and fatigue. Clinton St. Baking Company & Restaurant, Purvis St

Strolling down the busy street of Purvis Street in Singapore, I am faced with eateries left and right, quite literally. From a quiet Japanese yakitori joint to busy dessert places packed with yuppies and youngsters, Purvis Street is a hotspot for foodies any day of the week. Parking here is sparse, especially on weekends. But take the MRT to Bugis and it is a short five-minute walk to the food haven. I landed in Singapore on a bright Tuesday afternoon, appetite in full swing and nerves aplenty for an important meeting I had the same evening. So, I really wanted a good meal to kick off my Singapore trip. After getting into Estee's car, we discovered that the cafe she initially had planned on

Mezza9 Champagne Brunch, Grand Hyatt Singapore

Mezza9 at Grand Hyatt Singapore is already well-known for its world-class, international buffet spread. It is a popular choice for birthdays and other special occasions. Grand Hyatt is actually one of my favourite hotels in Singapore to go to for a staycation and of course, to enjoy their incredible champagne brunch on Sundays. So, if you like being pampered that way, you know where to go... Champagne is free-flow for the champagne brunch, but one glass it all it takes to really enhance your meal here at Mezza9. I was seated right next to the dessert bar, which made it very tempting for me to start my meal off with one of their decadent chocolate tarts, but I managed to exhibit some form of

Malaysian wins Heineken's world's best bartender competition 2016

Consistency, accuracy and determination is the name of the game according to Eddy Jay. In April this year, Eddy Jay Jaimin from The Beer Factory (TBF) represented Malaysia at the Heineken Global Bartender Final 2016 in Amsterdam. The unassuming bartender went on to defeat bartenders from 15 other countries to be crowned Heineken’s World’s Best Bartender. Following his victory, Eddy spoke about his experience and imparted some knowledge on the technique of pouring a perfect Heineken and the importance of always delivering a great drinking experience at an event hosted by TBF on August 4. Eddy explained, “To master the techniques of pouring the perfect Heineken®, you must first understand the

The Locker & Loft, Damansara Kim

My first visit to The Locker & Loft, I made a fool of myself because I couldn't find its entrance. Who would have thought a shoddy-looking, battered row of lockers would turn out to actually be a secret door to a place I would consider sui generis as far as bars go? But The Locker & Loft has a remarkable sense of individuality in its interior design. Upon entering the hidden bar, you will find yourself face to face with Paul Dass’ and Deepak Gill’s favourite photograph of working men having lunch at the Rockefeller building site. The bar counter itself is a work of art. Sip cocktails, chug beers and snack on beer food at the 25 foot long copper bar and appreciate its beauty. It is also surro

Carousel, Royal Plaza on Scotts Singapore

Carousels have always been one of my favourite rides to go on at theme parks. It's relaxing to sit on one of the horses or carriages as I go round and round, watching the people pass in a haunting, blurry motion. Carousel, the restaurant at Royal Plaza on Scotts, gave me a similar feeling, except I was going around the world with food on their "ride". One thing special about Carousel is that it is one of the few halal-certified buffet places in Singapore. But interestingly enough, as I was told by their head chef, it isn't the restaurant itself that is halal-certified, but it is in fact, each individual station that is halal-certified. That is incredibly reassuring for the Muslim travellers

Rumpoles Bar, Hotel Jen Tanglin

Starting this August, Rumpoles Bar at Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore will be serving five hawker-inspired cocktails. Wacky and unique reinterpretations of popular local favourites like teh-o limau ice, kopi-c and ice kachang, these drinks were the brainchild of Rumpoles’ resident bartender, Ms Nur Veronica. For instance, if you reckon you are an adventurous person, Kopi-B is the cocktail to try. Unique and nutty, the combination of Highwest rye-infused bacon whiskey, Punt e Mes (a dark, bitter Italian vermouth) and a Maraschino cherry make for a full-flavoured, hearty drink accented by a touch of cherry sweetness. And yes, you even get bacon strips on a mini bamboo skewer to use as your stirrer
